Vaseline!

Hi all,

Is anyone else using Vaseline on their babies skin? The original jelly Vaseline.
I'm currently using as the final layer of my 8 month's skin moisture to lock it in due to his eczema.
I'm not entirely sure if that's the safest method.
Thanks x

I'm curious about your layering technique please share. My son has eczema prone skin.

In regards to the original baseline with the blue lid, we have a tub but we don't use it often.

Vaseline is definitely not the most natural product to use but if it’s working for you then it’s working for you. It’s derived from petroleum.

What else do you use on his skin?

I personally don’t use it due to the petroleum, I use 100% natural Shea butter or coconut oil.
And then 2-3 times a week I use a mix of chamomile oil and lavender oil. Again 100% natural.
There are SO many creams, even ones prescribed by a doctor, out there marketed for dry and eczema prone skin, but when you scrutinise the ingredients, they have so many potential irritants in.
My toddlers skin became so much better using natural products and giving him probiotics for gut health x

Yes, it is one of the safest options for eczema prone skin and the way you layer it is ideal.

However there are other options you could use instead, like hydromol or fifty:50 ointment. Where are you based?

I prefer aquaphor to Vaseline but that’s a personal preference thing I think more than anything

Thanks everyone super helpful!

For those who have asked, I use zero base cream (on prescription) followed by organic coconut oil and then Vaseline on top.
Do this 4 times a day & also steroid cream is used sparingly on flare ups.

I dislike using all these products but can't help it.

I have been to the gp today and been given a heavier emollient to try out.

I fully agree with re so many products out there
Marketed under "eczema friendly" that have the usual irritants such as parfum, other fragrances, citric acid etc.
For bath time I use oilutum

I agree with the petroleum based product issue. Natural is best where possible.

I definitely recommend Yuka as a handy app to check some products, and also the No Harm Bum Balm cream for anything skin related - this is 100% natural, but it's a bit of trial and error for everyone. Mustela is a decent brand for creams too.

Eczema can be caused by a lot of things, so have you tried looking at the root cause? GPs tend to just prescribe rather than help you work through it, and it's such a common issue. If you'd like, I can share a list of things you can try change that I pulled together for other mum friends and see if they help? It sounds like you're using an awful lot of products! Feel free to message me. 😊
