So my family 2 months ago decided to relocate about an hour away by car to Brooklyn from Stamford. We have visited mother in law 2x however she’s not been here at all. Her grandson is 6 months so not as easy to shlep him there.

Her home is not baby friendly. Would need to shlep all this things/ prepare our food b/c she rarely has anything in her fridge. Am I asking for too much to try to get her to come here once? She is healthy & full of energy from what I can see! She’s always looking to go back to work even at 80! But yet she just complains to my husband that we only went there 2x in 2 months. She’s not the most pleasant when do visit anyway.. can anyone relate?

I prefer to travel 3 hours to my MIL rather than watching her try to "fix" and clean our perfectly normal house against my wishes. Literally can't leave her alone in any room or the yard or she starts "helping". But that's just me 🤷

Hi Jennifer where does she live? Wow so sorry! Does your partner intervene ?

@Pauline nope he doesn't see the problem since she's trying to help. She's in RI and we're in NY. Our daughters a good traveler luckily. Husband used to live in Stamford when we dated how are you liking it?

We lived in Stamford for 2.5 years. It’s all driving there & I prefer the walking / convenience of Brooklyn where I grew up so we found a great apt in a residential area here.

I like it here b/c it’s a lot more lively

Yes my husband is the same doesn’t place boundaries

I think that people forget how hard it is to take care of a baby, and all the things you need to pack if you travel. They don’t remember how much easier it is to stay home close to all the things that make it easier. And yes, sometimes partners will be defensive of their parents, and have trouble making boundaries.

I would say be open and honest with everyone about your feelings and what you are dealing with. And if they don’t understand where your limits are, you will have to make peace with that to save your sanity.
