Feel like my milk supply is low in the evening

I wake up leaking and I leak throughout the night but when it gets to 6pm and my baby goes through witching hour I feel like I don’t have any milk, my boobs feel empty if that makes sense. Any ideas why?

It probably is. Milk supply tends to dip some in the evening because of hormones. Can’t remember which. But it’s normal. Annoying but very normal.

@MJ_xo thank you, is there anything I can do to increase it? X

Nothing I tried. I think it’s just a normal part of supply :(

Milk supply is highest 12-4am. Your supply is also lower during witching hour because of stress. It's just normal peaks and troughs of breastfeeding.

It's very normal to have less available volume in the evenings and babies will often want to cluster. Prolactin is highest between 1am-5am. So higher volume follows.

Your breastmilk is also thicker during the evening which contributes to it feeling low, whereas it’s higher of a morning, but also more watery to give baby that good hydration. Plus Bub usually cluster feeds of an evening so the boobs are always left feeling empty. Completely normal and also annoying I know!

Thanks everyone, I was panicking thinking I would need to give her formula!

@Zara oh mumma. Absolutely not. So long as baby is having enough wet nappies and is growing along their curve, there's typically nothing to worry about. Let baby cluster feed when ever they feel they need. They know what to do.

@Kirsten thank you! Yeah she defo has enough wet / dirty nappies and she’s is gaining enough weight but she gets frustrated at my breast in the evening, like there’s nothing there for her 😭

@Zara if you’re super full and leaking during the morning, she’s probably just getting frustrated that it’s not coming out like a pressure hose in the evening too and she has to actually work for it! Keep going at it though, I found at times feeding on an exercise ball helped, as the bouncing was like a distraction to keep her calm

@Shantelle haha yeah sounds about right!! Thank you!! Ah I gave my exercise ball away 😭

Zara, have a read of all these age related posts. The 10-12 week mark is particularly hard. Then another tough phase at 4 months. But with that knowledge you can get through it https://www.instagram.com/s/aGlnaGxpZ2h0OjE4MzU0MzU2NzAxMTEwNDQ5?story_media_id=3415690224451462127&igsh=aTJjdnFtdmRjY2Qy

@Moon thank you so much!!!
