Counting, phonetics and feelings

I’m really struggling teaching my little one how to count etc, he’s not remotely interested. I know they’re only 3 and a half but I thought he’d be more interested at this point. The flash cards and books aren’t working for him, are there any other creative ideas out there?? X

Just physically count things with him in everything so for example putting his socks on count them with him. I would say to do that for the first few weeks. It will absorb into him. Then after that get him to repeat it. There are a few decent things on kids YouTube if you allow him to watch it. That’s where my son gets it from. Number blocks is amazing my son knows his square numbers but I don’t lol

I did counting steps with my daughter as a game on the way to nursery or in our house . She eventually got it! Take something they may find fun & pop into that x

We just count everything. Our clothes as they’re going on, our steps, the microwave. If you do cooking together that’s a great way of incorporating maths too - counting, adding, measuring.

It sounds like he isn’t ready for flash cards and books yet so I’d just focus on helping him understand what numerical quantity is through real life experiences like 1 means 1 object or 3 means 3 things I.e have fun counting steps, cutlery when setting the table or counting during play or can I have 3 crisps please etc. Once he has confidence in understanding numbers, he will become naturally more interested and may be ready to recognise them. You can gradually introduce numbers in the environment like numbers on doors, recycling boxes or in shops. You can have fun playing games like hidding his cars in the garden and then having fun counting them together, counting in hide and seek or counting each time he goes down the stairs or gets dressed. Maths is something that really needs to be taught with real physical objects, frequent expose will naturally build curiosity and knowledge. I would just follow his lead on it so he doesn’t see maths as a negative thing

I went to a school tour (even though a year early) and the head teacher literally said don’t worry about teaching them counting phonics etc as that’s their job. I’ll focus on keeping him alive and they can teach him how to count

Thanks every one!
