Breastfeeding antihistamines

NHS website says non sedating antihistamines are ok to take whilst breastfeeding, but the chemist won’t give me any because the back of all packaging says not to be taken if breastfeeding. Has anyone else taken antihistamines whilst breastfeeding?? Confused as surely the NHS website isn’t wrong

I’m doing combi feeding and have recently started taking antihistamines because my hayfever is unbearable! The pharmacist I spoke to said it’s not recommended but it’s ultimately up to you, could you get some in the supermarket if the chemist won’t give you any?

https://www.breastfeedingnetwork.org.uk/factsheet/hayfever/ I go by this. I'm still taking my fexofenadine as its the only one that works for me x

if you go to the gp your doctor can prescribe some that are ok to take while breast feeding

Look at the breastfeeding network. Pharmacist refused to sell to me also and said to contact the GP so I did and they said just buy them Off the shelf at the supermarket 🤣

Cetirizine and loratadine are generally considered safe antihistamines during pregnancy and breastfeeding but my midwife said often they will say on the back ‘not recommended’ as there has been no official testing carried out - so totally up to you. I’m currently taking Cetirizine for Hayfever x

Thanks ladies, bought some cetirizine yesterday off the shelf and will be taking one today!!!!

Pharmacists can be hit an miss- some completely risk adverse and don’t explain or offer choices with counselling
