Midwife

Can someone explain like I’m five how hiring/paying for a midwife works with insurance? Will I need to do tons of paperwork myself to submit claims? I’m not insurance-savvy and I really want to hire a midwife and possibly do a homebirth but the idea of stressing out over the paperwork intimidates me.

I am using a midwife, and you can submit to birth professional billing birthprofessionalbilling.com They do all the paperwork for you with your insurance and midwife. I think they take a percentage of what you get back, but worth it to not deal with the hassle.

I had to pay the full midwife fee upfront then get reimbursed

The way it works with my midwife is that I make to payments to her upfront, then she sends me a master bill at the end with all the insurance codes by line item. I submit that master bill to my insurance company and they reimburse me for qualifying items.

@Sarah this is awesome thank you! I’ll look into it ☺️

@Amy ok so having one bill sounds less stressful than submitting something after each visit!

They have the answers, I'm just here to say/ask .. so you're a fan of @aftermidnight too? Haha

At my OB practice they had a midwife. So as far as I know they just charged my insurance as usual. I didn’t have a home birth so unsure how that works.

Yeah it’s really not that bad. You can also call your insurance to try to get a list of the codes they use so that your midwife can try to match them to hers
