Milk supply drop during period

I started my period 6 weeks PP and it’s been super irregular and I dread it coming because I’ve noticed I’ve struggled with BAA (breastfeeding aversion and agitation) during my cycle and also a drop in supply during as well. I was reading a couple weeks ago that magnesium helps with BAA and I was genuinely desperate to not feel like throwing my baby off me every time she nursed while on my period that I started taking it ASAP. I paired it with calcium (make sure higher magnesium than calcium mg) and vitamin D which all help the other with absorption so that combo is crucial. I had a small period, like a day and a half long, like three weeks ago and it was super light right before I started taking the magnesium, calcium, and Vitamin D daily. I just started my period again the day before yesterday which sucks BUT this is the most “normal” period I’ve had so far 4 months PP. it’s heavy yeah but it also looks healthier than the other ones I’ve had. Also I didn’t even know it was coming because I have had NO breastfeeding aversion. My LO nurses all night regularly and it’s been no different the last two days bleeding. Usually it’s unbearable. And my milk supply hasn’t dropped at all either. Not sure if everyone would have the same great experience I’ve had but if you have any of these problems, I definitely recommend trying it!!!

I also asked my OB before starting magnesium/calcium and he said there’s no science that backs it but it doesn’t hurt to try. I wish there was more research done on women’s health because this would be such helpful information for women struggling with the same thing if it was “proven” to be a thing that works and helps

Also these are separate supplements than the prenatals I still take that do have both magnesium and calcium in them in small amounts

Unfortunately that’s a common thing that happens. With my first child I came to peanut with that question and many people said calcium and magnesium together works to prevent the dip and it really does work

It's not exactly low supply, the milk can taste different (saltier) so babes refuses and then supply can reduce. Baby should cluster when they realise the milk has gone back to normal to bring the supply back up again afterwards.

@Kirsten interesting. My baby has never refused breast on my period or not but I have noticed it go down even tho she’s feeding normally. I have heard the hormones can make it taste different though

@Kiki my girl hasn't refused either, but they could still be taking in less, thus the drop 🤷🏼‍♀️ I pump 3 days a week at work and haven't noticed a difference in supply when I have my period.
