14 month old awful sleep

My son has just turned 14 months and his sleep is honestly terrible at the moment. It hasn’t been good in about 6 months now but I feel like it’s actually getting worse, which I didn’t think was possible. I think he’s transitioning from needing 2 day naps to only needing 1 but his naps and his night sleep are all over the place. Some nights he will only sleep 8.5 hours and it’s broken sleep. He can have anything from 1.5 to 3 hours of nap time in a day because of this. But it’s getting really hard to fit 2 naps into a day as he stays awake for 5-6 hours at a time! He also HATES going into his cot/own room now. As soon as I put him down in there he will start crying and it won’t stop. If he wakes at night I will rock him back to sleep in his room and the second I put him down in his cot he will be awake and crying again. This has been happening for the last week. Please someone tell me I’m not the only one!

It sounds to me like he might be overtired from trying to squeeze in the second nap. Since he can stay awake for at least 5 hours why not test out just going for the one nap? I’ve heard of other parents saying if their baby hit at least a 2 hour nap they just stuck with the one nap and did an earlier bedtime. We tried to transition my daughter to one nap this week but she wasn’t quite ready sadly. :/ She’s 13.5 months old and her sleep has been all over the place and crappy for a really long time too. I feel your pain!

We’re already on one nap and have been since 12 months but nighttime sleep has been terrible, just as you described. We used to read to her say goodnight and leave the room but it’s just not possible anymore. I’ve resorted to feeding to sleep or if that hasn’t worked lying on the double bed in her room pretending to go to sleep so she’ll go to sleep too then transferring her to her cot at some point in the night when I’m sure she’s in a really deep sleep. I can’t rock her she’s way too heavy for that now! Most nights for the last few weeks we’ve been cosleepjng for a few hours at least. Something I said I’d never do. Needs must! She has had 3 molars pop through in that time and I’ve just gone back to work so the disruption could be due to that. We are getting false starts almost every night too between 20 & 40 mins so it is beyond exhausting.

@Emma this is exactly like me! This evening I have got him to sleep finally at 8:40pm - he was awake for almost 7 hours but would not go to sleep for well over an hour. Then he woke up at 9:30pm, only 50 minutes later 😭 I actually don’t know what to do because his sleep is just worse than ever at the moment

A false start they say is due to overtiredness but for us it doesn’t seem to matter how much daytime sleep she’s had. It must be a developmental leap or something! If so it’s a phase and it’ll pass. I felt completely lost a few weeks ago but I kind of feel better that I know I can lay down and she’ll eventually go to sleep next to me. It’s far from ideal but I’m putting her back in her cot after less and less time and so I’m getting more sleep again

And just like that she’s slept through! No false start, no feed! 11 hours 10 and counting. What did we do yesterday differently!? Absolutely nothing

@Emma I wish this would happen to me 😂 I’m wondering if it’s his leap. He’s currently in leap 9 fussy phase and has about another week left. He’s also got his molars coming through as I’ve seen today the tiniest bit of one has cut through! X

Don’t worry, we were back to a 5am wake up last night. Took until 6.35am for her to go back to sleep and I didn’t manage to
