Formula Prep Machines- yay or nay?

Hi everyone! First time mumma here, baby due in Aug and hence everything is new🌞

I've been reading a lot of pros and cons about formula Prep Machines such as the Tommee Tippee perfect prep and other brands that have similar products.. wondering if anyone has had first hand experience using these and can share some suggestions? Are they worth it? Has anyone had serious concerns such as baby developing gas or water being too hot when dispensed etc?

Thanks so much!!

I used one and really liked it, never had any issues

Hiya đŸ‘‹đŸŒ we had a Tommee Tippee prep machine with our first and it was a life saver! We bought one and then we borrowed another from a family member to have upstairs for the night feeds.

As long as you follow instructions and clean/change filters when it says we did have any issues xxx

I used 1 with my eldest and we really liked it apart from my little boy did suffer with reflux, not sure if the prep machine had anything to do with it or not.

We arnt using it this time round and upto now hes good

Used ours from 6 weeks until she turned 12 months. Absolute life saver. Just do weekly cleans and occasional deep cleans, filter changes etc! Will definitely use again if we have another x

My fav buy! Its been so helpful. I have the Tommee Tippee prep its brilliant

You could also have a look at the nuby rapid cool flasks if you are unsure about the prep machine. You add the hot water and formula and it brings it to the right temp in 2 mins.

Another vote for the perfect prep. I change the filters more often and try to clean frequently. It’s been the most relied-on baby product we’ve bought, especially in the nights and through the fog of the newborn days.

this is the main point I've been reading even on TTs own website!! Was this with their latest upgraded model? Or the older one? And thankyou so much for your replyđŸ«¶đŸŒ

Avatar

aw that's so reassuring for me, thanks for sharing Hannah! Did you get the most recent model from Tommee Tippee? Or the previous one?

Avatar

hey Katherine! It's interesting you mentioned this because I was looking into the Nuby just yesterday! My question on this is, doesn't this method make the rapid cool a one time use? Assuming that everytime a round of feed is made, the actual cooler bottle needs to be washed and sterilised? Would that feel helpful during the late nights? Do correct me if I'm wrong though, keen to know more :)

I bought one and was loving it until I bought a water thermometer and seen the hot shot it was giving was only 60degrees and not the recommended 70, havent used it since. If you get one I would say just check the temperature every so often to make sure its hot enough x

No babe do the Nuby Rapidcool! Anecdotal reports of extra bubbles/reflux and a bitch to clean. We dumped ours within weeks

Avatar

I’ve used the prep machine for both babies! However this time around we also had a nuby rapid cool! Absolute lifesaver when you’re out!x

Avatar

thanks so much Madeleine!! Do you need to wash and sterilise the rapid cool after every use? If yes, does that help with late nights? What's your experience?

I’ve loved using my TT prep machine. One thing I would say is the health visitors and midwives don’t advocate them as they are not ‘nhs’ approved and if your baby ends up colicky or with reflux they will dissuade you from using them but there is no research to say that the machines cause or make these symptoms worse some babies just are more prone to reflux or colic than others.

We did extensive research on the machines and found buying new rather than second hand is likely to be better as you don’t know how long a used one hasn’t been in use for and could have potential to have a build up of bacteria in the system if they haven’t been used for a long time and in storage. Like others have said as long as you clean and change filters you shouldn’t have any issues â˜ș

Avatar

yes they need to be washed and sterilised after each use but I got two and you can use them out and about too. There is also a UV steriliser you can get that does it in less than a min I think. I’ve just been using Milton

Avatar

I’m not too sure on them. Apparently 85% of them were found to not produce water hot enough to kill all harmful bacteria in the formula.

It’s said to try and temp test the water that comes out of your machine, it needs to be above 70c or it’s not heating the formula properly and can make the baby sick

Here’s some good insight onto the tommee tippee prep which is one of the most popular

I've had one for all my babies. My oldest is 3 in October and due another in less than 10 weeks. It's an absolute game changer, especially since those night feeds save a whole lot of messing around. Even going out during the day, I invested in a nuby, rapid, cool, which works miracles. Water is already at a suitable temperature for the baby to drink if out and about! Good luck ❀

Wash and cold water sterilise would be best! We had a Milton bucket on the go so a quick soak in there would do it. I think some people get two for long days out? https://uk.nuby.com/blogs/real-talk/how-to-use-your-nuby-rapidcoolℱ-the-complete-guide

When does it get better?

I was crying on the phone with the perinatal mental health team today and the lovely lady, bless her, kept assuring me that it gets better. I kept telling her I hope so because people have been saying that since having my LO and it just feels like it keeps getting worse. She assured me it gets better....

Rant/WWYD

My sister (youngest, 24) has two kids, 4 & 1, and i (oldest, 30) just have my one who’s 6mo old right now, so i ask her for advice or call her to vent about things sometimes. Well im tired of her turning around and telling my other family members that I’m “losing my sh*t.” Literally have not lost my sh*t nor have i ever freaked out to her about my baby, i just call her to talk and tell her what stage my baby is in or talk through how im feeling, but she chooses to tell people that im like a complete nutcase or something which worries me that my family is going to start being judgmental about me as a mother or looking at me funny like I’m some fragile ticking time bomb.

What would you do in this situation? I’m already pretty much decided that I’ll stop telling her anything about my struggles, but I’m almost at the point where i feel like it should be confronted because she, of all people, should understand what I’m going through.

Not drinking

I’m going crazy. Baby born at 2.26kg. Slow to put on weight. This last week hasn’t put on any. Been trying to feed him at night and he’s not interested at all. Fast asleep. During day he will have 5 minute gulps and that’s it. He don’t cry for milk. I’ve got to keep offering to him. I try to offer it every hour but I don’t know what I’m doing. HV said nutrition comes after 5 minutes so I should pump first and then give him. I find it so hard. I tried to pump one boob nothing came. The other abit came. Tried giving him express he’s not interested in that too. Sometimes he will go for a longer a feed but not long at all. He’s 4 months and is currently 5.46kg. I have no family or friend support here and wish I had a cook, cleaner and nanny to help with everything so I can concentrate on the little one. I don’t know what’s wrong with him but I’m loosing it. It doesn’t help that my also stressed generally about my relationship and life circumstances. Any advice that will work. Any comfort you can give. I’m fed up. Is this regression - not feeding. He’s fast fast asleep. I’ve been trying to push the nipple in but that mouth is closed shut. I took some clothes off. Changed his nappy but he’s still asleep. Please help

Leaky nappy help

What nappies are you using to stop leaks?? We use pampers ultra dry size 5, and for the past few nights he has lashed through and we’ve had to completely change him during the night. Last night he leashed through twice!! He sleeps on his front and stays leaks through at the top of his leg where the tabs connect. Didn’t know whether to size up, he has a bit of a belly on him but he’s smack in middle of weight guidance so shouldn’t need too
