Sippy cups

Hope this is okay to post here but what sippy cups are recommend when weaning a baby. Do I just use a cup to get use to them sipping? Do I use a straw cup? Any advice would be amazing!

Following as I’m also wondering the same 😊

We started with a straw then moved to a munchkin 360 cup. She can use both interchangeably and shows interest in open top cups. It's entirely up to you what style you choose to start with but ultimately it's down to what baby prefers to use. Both will take some time to get used to and it's best to stick to 1 style in the early days just so baby can learn how to use it

We use a straw cup, we’ve got her a 360 cup but she can’t work it out still🤣

We started with an open cup at 5 months and it's been going great.

We use an open cup

@M how did you introduce it? Ours arrived the other day and I wanted to give it a try, but not sure how to start. I read it should be filled to the brim, but our little one gets so excited, I already see it flying across the room, with water everywhere 😅

following on from question do you just put breast milk/formula in it? Or did you try a bit of water?

We just used one of our every day cups. We started off with breast milk and then incorporated water around the 6 month mark with solids. We have never filled to the brim. He's not old enough to hold it himself yet so I didn't see a reason for it to be that full. We just tilt it until the liquid is touching his lip and he will drink. He started off sucking on the rim of the cup when we first introduced it, but he's gotten to the point now where he's truly drinking from it.

A straw or sippy or open cup that’s free flow. Lots of straw cups have valves which you want to avoid. Generally anything marketed as
‘Spill proof’ has a valve!

We’ve always used tum tums and he got it more or less straight away x

@M great! Thanks will try that 😊

We use a straw cup (free flowing, no valve) and he also loves to drink from our regular open cups. So far, I've found it's easier to get him to drink from the open cup when it's too big and heavy for him to hold himself. He really wants to put his fingers inside the cup to hold it and it makes it impossible for him to drink when it's a little cup that he can hold.

When I went to weaning workshop the other week, they were following the HENRY programme and they suggested free flow cups that don’t have valves in for their ‘teeth’

We used an open cup with water from 6 months - we tried a few, but I think the bibado cup (sippit) ended up being our favourite. It was weighted and small for little hands. We introduced a silicone straw cup (no valve) at around 9 months I think. We were really glad we introduced an open cup so early, but be warned it can be messy to begin with - pop a splash mat down. Well worth it in the long run though! We progressed to bigger and lighter cups as he got older. At 2 he’ll now quite happily rob a plastic pint glass I’m drinking from and finish it off for me no problem 🙃

Silly question but when you give them water are you still boiling it and letting it cool? I have only started giving her sips with meals and I’m still cooling boiled water but was wondering when you stop and start to give regular tap water x

Avatar

@Sam we did regular tap water as soon as we started weaning

Avatar

Yeah, same as Ebony, we started giving the same water we drink when we started weaning.

Ok fab thank you. I will start doing that also then as much easier x
