I have a 7 month old baby and we're thinking of getting a cat. My son really wants a kitten but I'm not sure if that would be a crazy decision and should be sensible and get an older cat instead?

(The 10 year old in me wants to get a kitten too) 🐈

Second option should say 'older cat'

A kitten would probably settle into a house easier with a 10 month old in over an older cat IMO

I say go for it. Kittens are way easier than puppies. A reputable breeder won’t take them away from the mother until 12 weeks and by that time they are usually litter trained, which is nice.

The biggest thing for me would be the finances. They can be pretty expensive in the beginning for the shots and getting them fixed, and we all know kids are expensive, so be mindful to not take on a kitten and then realize you can’t afford it.

It’s harder to find an older cat that’s comfortable around children especially smaller ones! A kitten would definitely settle into the home much easier! I have a 3 year old cat (we’ve had him since he was 12 weeks old) and it was big adjustment introducing a newborn to him! My little boy is almost 7 months now and absolutely loves him but we definitely had to be a bit more cautious and wary, my cat is a jealous boy being with us for a few years just him!

Highly recommending adopting if you can, usually they already have all of their injections and neutering etc x

its definitely something I've thought about and wondered whether I'd be getting myself into a lot of work! My older son is 11 though and adamant that if we got a kitten at the start of the summer holidays, he'll do majority the looking after and cleaning etc. He is very caring with animals/pets.

Kitten, 100%. An older cat is harder to adjust with and may not even like kids. A kitten will grow up with kids knowing no different.

Thank you everyone! Definitely think I'll go for it with a kitten and make sure my son is prepared for the responsibilities! đŸ˜ș

My parents brought a puppy and then 2 weeks later I was born and it was amazing dk how it is to keep up with a 7 month old and a kitten but myparents always said its was so nice, people used to call us little besties when I was younger now at 22 having my own in October I do have a 12 year old dog but I would happily buy a pet for them x

We got a kitten when my son was 2 years old. He’s now 5. Then I had my second baby 5 months ago. We also have a dog before our first child.

Kittens are easy

i voted a kitten that way they can learn to be comfortable around kids from a young age. we got our kitty when he was about 6 months old and my daughter was 20 months

i've raised a few kittens and would absolutely get one if i were you. sometimes they do need a buddy though, so that's something to keep in mind. idk if my kid is like anyone else's, but the toddler being loud in the house did condition my cat to leave when my boy is out and about so make sure they don't man handle the poor thing lol

aww I love this â˜ș

I’d actually even say get 2 kittens!! They come potty trained and they’re quite easy, and when you get 2 you avoid lone kitten syndrome more, they settle easier and they’re happier as they have a proper playmate

We got 2 kittens and so happy we did, also felt much better when we had to leave the house etc as we knew they had each other and there wouldn’t be this tiny kitten alone crying😭 but mostly they keep each other entertained in a way we can’t provide

Get a kitten. Getting an older cat will be tricky, there’s no telling how they will feel about children while already trying to get accustom to the home. Plus depending on the age, you’re looking at possible health issues that start with cats as they get older.
