Viral Infections

My 18 month old was born 4 weeks premature which I know isn't a lot, he had jaundice when he was born and was under the blue light for 3 days, he is so prone to viral infections and has come down with another one over the last couple of days, he was sick and gad a fever but that has gone now, the main issue now it he has such a snotty nose and a cough that just won't go away and his keeping him up most of the night and when he finally goes down he gets woken up again.
Does anyone have any tips on how to help him, I've tried propping his cot up slightly so he's not completely lay flat, he's now sleeping in his travel cot downstairs so he's closer to us.
I have been to the out of hours GP and they have said they can't do anything for him as it seems like it's viral, I just need a bit of advice 🙏👶

Do you have a snot sucker? Our little girl hates it but is happier afterwards. We also religiously do a bath before bed after running the shower for a bit to make the room all steamy, and use a calpol menthol plugin when she’s all congested xx

Pop some Vicks on his vest or get the calpol plug in to help with the congestion. A nice hot steamy bathroom is also helpful x

@Katherine I don't, I can get one though, I thought a bath might help but while he was struggling with a fever going up and down I thought that might make it worse now that it's gone ill definitely give it a go, thank you xx

For congestion I always do:
- saline spray
- steamy bathroom with eucalyptus spray
- sit for 10 & have a bath (slightly warmer than normal)
- saline before massage/dressing
- snot sucker

Usually with this snot is pouring out their nose before the end of a bath

I’ll also spray rooms we are in frequently with eucalyptus spray every now and then throughout the day.

For fevers usually I either alternate or give both at the same time of paracetamol & ibuprofen.

Snot sucker, snuffle babe saline spray, they hate it but it relieves them so much! We also dab some baby olbas oil on a bib and attach it to the cot but out of reach so it’s close enough for her to breathe in overnight. And then baby vapour rub on the chest.

My 2 year old has had too many viral infections to count and the cough lingers for what feels like forever. Doctors now think he might have asthma, as his breathing can get a bit difficult at times (mainly at night and with activity). He's now got a trial of steroid inhalers for a month to see if it helps and has had the preventer inhaler for a few months as well. Born 3.5 weeks early, but no jaundice or anything.
