Misbehaving + tantrums

Anyone else’s little one going through another defiance stage?!

We’ve just hit the 19 month mark and he’s started hitting a lot. He will smack people he’s familiar with in the face and then smile. He has also got it in for our dog at the moment, going up to her and kicking her or throwing his toys at her.

I’m at a loss of what to do. When he was hitting us we just started ignoring him as we didn’t want to give him any reaction, but obviously with him hitting our dog we can’t just ignore it as I will not tolerate that. I have started putting him in his cot for 2 minute time outs but I don’t think he really understands.

Anyone else going through this & any advice??

I'm going through the exact same thing. We do the same as you. We put him down and walk away and verbally say what he shouldn't do and frame what he should do. We try and avoid using 'no' (rightly or wrongly) - we focus on no being for danger as we found he would just laugh and giggle if we told him no.

I'm hoping it is just a phase. We are together in solidarity!

Currently going through this too. I tell him no firmly and then demonstrate being nice and say “aww” and then he copies. Hitting has become less since doing it so I’m hoping it stops completely soon. Another thing that works for us, is ignoring it but redirecting his attention to something else

We tell our baby no once when he hits and then show him how to gently stroke and we use the word “gentle”. If he does it again we stick him in the corner and say no in a really stern voice then we walk away.

I only ignore the tantrums when he can’t get when he wants but I correct the hitting behaviour.

God help us all 🤷‍♀️🥲
P.s hope you dog is ok 🐶

My daughter has never hit until recently she’s started hitting my face , but when she does I’m firm with her, as in, my voice is gentle, but firm with the no we do not hit it’s not nice, and no smiles etc so she can learn it’s not acceptable. She will for the most part stop and off she goes doing something else.

But with the tantrums.. we just let her ride it out. Usually over it in a minute or two but crying is not as fun as playing lol. there’s good days and bad days x
