If social services ever got involved for any reason would they take the kids off you if you or your partner smoked weed?

They aren’t involved and never think they would be lol but was a discussion because my partner smokes it lol. I get anxious of people smelling it or knowing he smokes and ringing social services lol. Would they take my kids off me because he smokes it? He smokes outside.

Well where I am it’s legal so no, not here but I assume if it’s illegal and they were involved for other reasons it would be the same as having any other illegal drugs in the house? I could be wrong just my thoughts!

I would think not. It’s illegal in my state but even so it seems like a very minor offense. Parents can drink however much alcohol they want but goodness forbid someone smoke a little weed? I say this as someone who has never smoked a day in my life but I genuinely don’t think it’s a big deal. I googled it and it basically said as long as the child isn’t exposed and it doesn’t impact the parents ability to care for their kids they won’t take the children.

Best he doesn’t smoke around the kids

If it was the only risk factor then absolutely not. It takes a lot to have your children removed. The social worker would need to build a case to prove that you are negligent or abusive. And then it would have to go to a judge who would have to approve removal. Children aren’t just removed in the UK despite what people will have you believe. Even in cases where children probably should be removed, SS work with the families through intervention before looking at removal.

The system is overcrowded already and there aren’t enough foster carers/residential placements for children that desperately need them.

Smoking weed isn’t enough to trigger removal. You’d likely just be given information for quitting and offered support for this.

No

Should say we are UK so it’s illegal x

he obviously doesn’t smoke it around the kids…

So many people smoke weed.
They would need to show that’s it’s impacting negatively on the child’s care, causing them severe harm.
Ive seen children on a child protection plan (the highest level of intervention before removal), that should have been removed, and they weren’t. It’s extremely difficult to remove children from their parents.

They would likely just offer him a referral to a drug service for support to stop.

I want to say no. however, if he gets pulled over with an illegal substance in the car and your kids are present. Then that could be an issue.

If it’s legal, it’s treated like alcohol. Has to be kept out of children’s reach. And one sober adult present.

idk if you’re uk or not, but i’m in the uk and i work in a nursery. we have a duty to safeguard children, and we have an online reporting system for any concerns, they only go to the designated safeguarding leads but it’s to create a paper trail potentially. i’ve had to make a log before because i was getting a nappy from a child’s bag and it stank of weed. i then started smelling the clothes, and everything in the bag smelt of weed. i personally have nothing against people who smoke weed, however it’s concerning if a child’s clothes are covered in the smell of it and their nappies etc. i don’t know if they’d take the kids off you, in this instance social wasn’t called it was just a report i logged, but im just saying make sure it’s away from the house, don’t smoke inside and make sure he showers and cleans himself before coming into contact with the kids so they don’t smell of it too x

Anyone else question why so many lol going on the post? Lol

Avatar

I’m so funny about the smell I don’t think that would ever happen. He smokes outside. Totally get the nursery side of things too. They aren’t exposed to it xx

Avatar

what do you mean lol? X

Avatar

As said, schools and nurseries would have to log any safeguarding concerns (the smell of weed) on a safeguarding system. Unless there were additional concerns then there wouldn’t be any referral to the next step up.

As serious as this post can get, there's 3 lol in it. I didnt find anything funny about the post which others can find scary being in an illegal state.

Avatar

I can’t see any lol comments in this post??

Avatar

she’s talking about how many times OP writes “lol” in the post. can’t say i noticed it much either until I saw L’s comments, so they’re just being unnecessary.

Avatar

ohhhh! I didn’t even notice!

Avatar

ohhh. I put lol a lot at the end of things. And when I’m anxious I do it more… I’m in an illegal state and was clearly worried hence why I posted. You’ve read too much into the “lol”
