When the waters break - then what?

I’m aware you have to contact triage and make your way to hospital straight away but is there like a time limit on how quickly
You need to get there? I’m 33 weeks and not planning on being far away from the hospital anytime soon, just in case!!

I was tested at my booking appointment in January, I assume once your waters break and you get to hospital they test again to make sure it is still present? Without unnecessarily pumping you with anti biotics? Or do they put you on an IV drip regardless because you have had GBS at some point during pregnancy?

I’ll be asking my midwife at next appointment but I’m always keen to learn about others’ experiences who are in the same situation!

Thanks! Xx

I went in straight away with my first when waters broke and he came 5.5hours after waters breaking and second my waters didn’t break until 1 min before he was born but in both scenarios I was in the hospital 4.5hours before they were born (I don’t there is any limit/point to panic how quick you get there, I think it’s just ideal to be as soon as you are able to/ready, and antibiotics needs to be 4 hours before baby is born)

I wasn’t tested at all during this pregnancy, but because I was positive last pregnancy I was asked if I wanted antibiotics anyway and I said yes, I just wanted them just incase as I know it can come and go. I wasn’t on an IV drip, they just put in a canula at the back of my hand and then a dose of the antibiotics and that’s it until 4 hours later when they’ll just give you another dose (takes about 30seconds) so not attached to anything (I was also able to have a water birth with mine, I just needed to keep the hand with the cannula out of the water) xx

Hi Kimberly ah ok that’s good to know about IV drip isn’t the only option as I wanted to be as active as possible without dragging around a drip 😂😂 thanks for sharing though! Xx

I waited a couple of days at home after my water broke. I monitored for signs of infection, Etc and kept in touch with my health care providers

hey Leslie thanks for your comment. May I ask how you monitored signs of infection of your baby if they hadn’t been born at that point? Xx

Signs of infection for myself/fetus, not the baby

this is just what I’ve been thinking so thankyou for asking

so I’ve only just seen your post.

I didn’t go with antibiotics for my first and I won’t be this time either.

It’s all down to your own personal choice. I personally didn’t want to pump antibiotics into my baby unnecessarily for an infection that might be there and that most women don’t even get tested for.

Hi guys I’m 23 weeks and my water have leaked so I’m admitted till the foreseeable

All I want to say is please have the antibiotics because I’m glad I had a course a few weeks back and started another course yday when my waters decided to leak

in your circumstances I would have antibiotics for sure.

It’s all down to personal preference and research that I made my choice with my first not to go with the antibiotics.

If things go differently this time around to my first. I will have the antibiotics but so far it’s all going well.

I really hope you are doing well and baby too.
