Would you put your child (under the age of 18) in an uber or other ride share service alone to get them somewhere?

My husband drives for uber for now and he’s picked up kids. He said they are as young as 10 years old. I told him not to it’s a liability you don’t want. They are literally a child. Apparently uber has this service. I could never let my child ride uber alone. If I couldn’t drive them or a trusted adult couldn’t drive them I would get in the uber with them and uber back to know they arrived safely. Or take another form of transportation where I know they are safe at all times.

No. I wouldn't want them to. If we lived somewhere with better public transportation, I'd probably allow them to take a train or bus under 18 because there's more eyes around to see if something is amiss. But a private Uber makes me a little more nervous

Avatar

I agree. Like if someone was living in New York City. It would be ok for a teen to take the train or a bus somewhere since public transportation is so widely used. But an uber? I could never.

Avatar

Absolutely not, read up on the UK Rotherham grooming scandal, happen literally around my area. Taxi drivers grooming young girls for sex.

Not safe at all.

Avatar

I’m afraid to even read that 😣 so sad.

Avatar

Its been years since I drove for Uber but when I did I wasn't allowed to pick up minors..he may want to double check that policy.

Avatar

Did you know that at the beginning of the 1900s people in the US used to send babies by postal service? And the postie would take them...

Avatar

Nope, I have never and would never get in one myself either.

Avatar

I wouldn't do it but I would also not judge a parent for doing it.
When my brothers and I were young, my mom had to put us in a taxi to take us to school every morning because of hers and my dad's working times.
I guess the difference was that they hired the same driver for the whole school year but he was still a stranger. And was also more than 20 years ago.

I would never allow my child. Grown women still get raped in those cars. But the fact that your husband is a normal person, I’d hate for him to not do it and have the kid get in the car with someone else.

However, your children and family are your priority so I definitely understand telling him no way.

yea bad things happened back then for sure but not like today.

They have "Uber for Teens" now, I've seen ads for it quite frequently.

If they’re younger than 13 he should deny it and report the person who tried

✅ Teen rides solo (age 13–17)

Teens this age can request rides themselves and head out solo—while all safety features are mandatory (PIN verification, live tracking, RideCheck) .
Parents receive real-time notifications, can track the ride, call the driver if needed, and access Uber’s safety tools .
Teens must enter a PIN (they give the driver the code), so the trip won’t start unless it’s secure ().
Uber requires that safety features cannot be disabled and applies enhanced RideCheck sensitivity during teen rides .

🔁 Parent-Requested Rides

Parents can also book a ride for their teen through their own Uber account, and that trip includes all the same safety monitoring .

🚫 For kids under 13

Only teens aged 13–17 are eligible. Anyone under 13 must ride with a supervising adult ().

📝 Bottom line

If your teen is 13–17 and in a supported city with Uber Teens, they can absolutely ride alone.

My son has been getting taxis to school since the age of 7 to his sen school so yes although I assume they are all crb checked.

Avatar

A teenager. Yes. A 10 year old. No.

Avatar

My 16 year old takes the city bus everywhere.

Avatar

My initial reaction is no, but, when I think hard about it there are certainly examples of exceptions I might make tbh.

Avatar

I wouldn’t trust taxi drivers. Uber or not. I know there’s tracking and stuff but there’s usually a way to bypass technology security

Considering that I’ve had creepy taxi drivers try it on me when was 18, definitely not

Avatar

yeah I told him to refuse the ride and report it to uber.

Avatar

the city bus has other riders they would not be alone I would let me teen take the bus if they were mature enough and had a phone to contact me to tell me they arrived safely.

Avatar

No I had a bad experience as a grown woman with a male taxi driver so I wouldn’t feel comfortable allowing my kids themselves. You just never know who is behind the wheel!!

Avatar

Honestly I don't trust Uber to even use it for myself, I would never put a child in one alone.

Avatar

I live in it a big city. Kids, especially tweens and teens get in Ubers all the time. Many of my students uber to school. It’s safer than catching a hack (local form of hitchhiking). I’m sure my girls will uber when they are teens.

Avatar

A 10 year old, no. An older teen, yes. Although these days it seems like people have their 16/17 year old locked down, unlike when I was a teenager. If a 16 year old can drive off by themselves, 15 in some places, why can’t they get in an uber?

Avatar

That's crazy. How is as young as 10 possible?

Avatar

@Jasmine As a 33 yr old adult. The last tike I used an Uber was coming home from school (nursingnschool)when the driver tried to drop my off at a random location unless I coughed up money. Anything can happen. I don't think teens should use it

Avatar

yup.

Avatar

sure anything can happen. But I’m not living in a bubble. Anything “could” have happened when we were younger too. People act like things didn’t happen back in the day. Idk about you but many kids/teenagers were out from sun up to sun down playing and hanging out. Things happened back then there just wasn’t social media. You can be in college, away from home-on your own at 17 but not ride in an uber? Lol. Or would you have your kid sitting home waiting to turn 18 then they’re magically safer?

Avatar

As a lyft driver I have taken kids without a parent before usually they are older like 15. I would not take younger kids, they should have a parent with them.
