Thinking about buying a house in Farnborough

Hello! My husband and I are considering moving to Farnborough but we are not familiar with the area. We just had viewing in Park Road and we really liked the area and the house. I heard primary schools are fine but not so good secondary schools around. The other downside I heard is that the town centre is a little bit rundown. What are your experiences living there? What area would you say are nice and safe for a young family of 4? Are GP practices and children's hospitals good ( my baby boy has some sort of asthma, hasn't been diagnosed yet but we have been admitted in hospital several times already) lastly what areas would you avoid? We are moving out of London so I have mixed feelings about leaving the city life but wanting to have more green areas and access to a nice spacious house. Thank you so much

Hi! I’ve been in farnborough for 8 years now, I think there is lots of good and some bad points. I lived in aldershot before so to me farnborough isn’t that run down in comparison 😅

I’ve never had a problem with our doctors/dentists or hospitals here we have always got an appointment quickly. We have attended Frimley and royal Surrey in Guildford for hospital appointments.

Personally, I prefer south Farnborough, anywhere around ‘church circle’ is great for schools. That’s the greener part of town too, King George park is lovely and has a good sized play park and duck pond. But it is near the flight path - don’t move to Farnborough if you’re bothered by plane noise! My little ones love watching the planes personally.

I like North camp and the cafes there, lots of friendly people (some characters too but I’ve never had any issues) good independent restaurants. It’s not anything fancy around here but it’s a commuter town so it’s popular and pricey! Feel free to message me 👍

I agree - I lived around Cove area for a few years and it’s definitely not the side of Farnborough I’d recommend. Had my car broken into on a locked and gated driveway and constant issues up and down the road. South Farnborough/north camp is absolutely the area I’d recommend too. More open spaces, schools, colleges and generally lower crime rate. My family live that side and love it! 😂

I can’t moan too much though as I’m back in Aldershot now 😂 keep telling myself it’s fine because Starbucks is here now 😂😂xx

Thank you! I am not bothered at all by planes as currently I live in North Hillingdon. I have Heathrow nearby and a military airport just a few blocks away 😂 Uxbridge, Hayes and Ruislip are my town centres so I am very easy to impress hahaha.

Ahhh perfect, you’re well used to airports then! We live right by the airport here but to be honest I barely acknowledge it now - it’s only private planes so smaller aircraft - only gets louder when the air show is on every two years and the traffic gets a bit more hectic - but then we get to watch all the jets and displays for free from here so that’s a win!

I meant to say that the town library is really good for kids - they have Lego/duplo construction club on Saturdays 2-4, lots of story times in the week and special events in the holiday. Theres a free aviation museum that’s open weekends….There’s a few different soft play/gymnastic type places and lots of good parks. I think it’s very easy for families here - it’s not the quietest or greenest, you’d want more Farnham/Surrey direction for that but it’s a price jump for houses and the schools are often over subscribed - which we found out when we tried to move there! 😅 Good luck with the house hunt!

ahhh yes I saw Starbucks is in now! I’m taking that as a sign the town is due to get better soon - that new development looks interesting 🤔

Agree about Cove - from what I’ve heard the schools aren’t great in that direction at the moment.

We lived in an rental in north Farnborough for a while and that area felt a bit green and more residential, but it was surrounded by really busy roads - and too dangerously close to Farnborough gate and Homesense 🤣

thank you so much for taking the time in replying to me 🙂 we already have 2 houses in mind and both of them are in the Park Road area. But unsure yet as we are also exploring Reading for London connection. Also I heard that Farnborough town centre will be rebuilt in the next couple of years, same with the leisure centre. We are a very active family, we love cycling, swimming and my daughter is doing gymnastics now. So for us having a nice leisure centre nearby with a good range of activities is kind of essential. So all good news if we were to move to Farnborough!

we went to do a viewing in the north but it was like a council state development and it didn't feel safe or nice because the house was kind of hidden in little paths among other houses. But surrounded area was lovely

just saw this reply sorry for delay! Park Road is nice we looked at a house just a few roads over, lots of families that side of town.

Yes the leisure centre plans are being finalised at the moment - they just want to do a pool and a gym though, we use the Camberley leisure centre which is a 15min drive and is a nice new centre - locally the Aldershot garrison centre offers swimming, gymnastics and courts so there are lots of options for clubs and activities very close by 👍 good luck on your search!
