Has anyone had cocodamol whilst pregnant? I’m nearly 10 weeks and have been in and out of A&E over the last few days with a severe ear infection. One doctor prescribed me 15mg which I took 2 doses to then be told by another doctor on another visit that it’s not safe? Help please as I’m in a lot of pain 😩 also taking co amox and some prescribed ear drops as well as been given IV paracetamol a few times.

https://www.nhs.uk/medicines/co-codamol-for-adults/who-can-and-cannot-take-co-codamol/ it says here it's probably not suitable, but if you go to the pregnancy and breastfeeding section it says ok for short periods - did the doctor who prescribed it know you are pregnant? I've been prescribed antibiotics by the doc before and didn't realise they didn't know automatically that I was pregnant even though I'd had my 12 week scan (I assumed it'd be on my notes) when I got to the pharmacy I asked them and they said no I couldn't have it so I had to go back and get a new prescription. I'd ask at a pharmacy if you can take it for now if the information here doesn't help you or if you want a 3rd opinion (if you can get to an open one) and then ring the docs tomorrow, or 111 if you can't wait til Monday and you're worried.
At the bottom of the pregnancy and breastfeeding page is a link to the risks of taking codeine in pregnancy if you want to inform yourself. I hope you are feeling a bit better 😩

ah thank you so much! Yes the doctor knew I was pregnant and the pharmacist also said it’s ok it’s only the 3rd trimester that makes it dangerous… but then two A&E doctors told me I couldn’t have it. Honestly I’ve seen about 5 doctors in the last 4 days and they all tell you different things 🤦🏻♀️

It's very frustrating when you get mixed messages like that 🙄 I guess for peace of mind you could always check with your midwife but I think if a doc and a pharmacist have both agreed it it sounds like it's ok.

Oh I also thought I should say because I'm not a doctor so didn't want to be like 100% you are safe to take it 😅 maybe you could ring 111 and get a phone appointment from an out of hours doc? It might just cement that it's safe for you.

This it the best website to use to look at medicines in pregnancy x
With any pain killer it’s always advised to use it for the shortest duration at the lowest dose x

thank you so much for all the info! I think it’s just hard because so many doctors have different opinions when it comes to things like this in pregnancy as obviously there aren’t enough studies… so just wondering if anyone on here has actually taken it x

thank you! X

I also have an ear infection (weird, never had one before). Just curious, did they prescribe antibiotics for you?

yes! At first they gave me flucloxacilin but the infection is really severe so they haven’t worked. They’ve changed me to co-amox and said both of these are safe in pregnancy. How awful is it! Feels 1000 x worse when you’re pregnant

Awww sorry to hear that!!!! Mine is definitely not as bad as yours. Laying on a hot water bottle helps me at least fall asleep, maybe try that. But hope it clears up for you quickly! x

all the side of my face is swollen so I’m using ice packs instead to help soothe 😭 it’s been awful, I’ve now been told the infection needs to be suctioned out by ENT but they can’t see me until Wednesday! Can’t cope 😩 thank you so much, hope you’re feeling better soon too x

My Dr was 12 weeks and said the lower dose she was taking but not sure if further along you can take

I got prescribed dihydrocodeine to take throughout my pregnancy last year, and that was from my consultant. Didn't even question it tbh

Honestly I’d ask your midwife. But I was given codiene when pregnant by a maternity ward in hospital. I was there for a week with my first. If you’re worried about it. I know dihydracodine is also fine xxx

thank you so much! How far along was you when you had codeine?

I was 24 weeks :) before that I had naproxen until I was 20 weeks prescribed. There’s a website https://www.medicinesinpregnancy.org This what the NHS use to see what’s safe if you’re unsure xxx

thank you! Xxxx
