Advice on having a puppy single mum

I truly believe pets are so beneficial and healing, they bring us joy and give us a purpose. They can bring you together as a family, and get you outside enjoying nature - however they can also be extremely exhausting and expensive.

I would personally wait and not get this particular puppy,
With the puppy being 9weeks already and you now feel pressured to run about and get everything, find the £650 - it’s stress when it should be a happy excited time.
A lot of questions you need to know about the breeder, the breeding, vaccinations and health checks.
These puppies can have underlying health conditions that can affect the future finances for all of you, along side the very regular grooming costs this breed needs.
I would save up a little bit so you feel more comfortable and start buying little bits of puppy items from now to spread the cost 🫶🏻 xx

I’d definitely recommend saving up first and making sure you’re fully prepared financially. At around 9 weeks old, puppies are especially vulnerable to things like tummy bugs, skin issues, and dietary allergies. There’s also the second vaccine due at around 10–12 weeks, which can add to the cost.

Have you considered getting pet insurance? Even putting aside a set amount each month (if you don’t want to opt for monthly insurance costs) could help cover any unexpected vet visits.

Getting a dog is truly one of the best things in life and the best furry friends on earth. However, taking the time to save and prepare now means you’ll be able to fully enjoy the experience later on, without the added stress. Even waiting a year could make all the difference and allow you to start that journey with total peace of mind 😊

I would be concerned the breeder has dropped the price so much, I’ve had litters of puppies and they’re so much work and cost so much to raise, there’s no way I’d offer to drop the price.

Getting a puppy is the best thing ever for sure, I couldn’t be without my dogs and I’m a single mum too. Ensure you can afford the upkeep, budget £100 a month minimum for food, vets, insurance, treats, grooming etc & make sure you have a good insurance policy like pet plan who will work with vets and pay them direct so you don’t have to face compromising the health of the dog because you can’t afford the vet bill or to pay upfront before claiming.

Make sure the puppies parents had health checks and ask to see the certificates too, ask lots of questions about their parents personalities as the puppy will inherit them & never buy a puppy if you can’t see them interacting with their mum, they should be comfortable around each other & obviously their puppy as it’s a red flag for puppy farms otherwise x

My son is also autistic and I am a single parent too. i have a labrador who is 7 years old. Last year I got got a dachsund puppy, it was hard at first, the first couple of months was hard i wont lie but i've never regretted it, shes helped my mental health massively. With this type of dog in particular, they require A LOT of grooming - their whole coat needs to be combed thoroughly at least once a day and unless you learn to cut them yourself, they will need regular trips to the groomers, which can be quite pricey. I work in a vets, and I find they're generally quite prone to health problems (ear infections, eye issues, skin allergies, heart conditions), so unless you have a large amount of savings, pet insurance is an absolute must have.
