Hi everyone I have recently tested positive for strep B I’m currently 26 and 5 days pregnant. Is it something I should be worried about? What will my birth be like? Any stories from anyone that has tested positive will be helpful as I have never heard of it.

See it as a positive they've found out before you deliver. I tested positive 3 days after birth and the fear that baby would get ill was awful! As far as I'm aware, you will be tested again around 37 weeks and given antibiotics when in labour. X

thank you ❤️

I tested positive recently (7 weeks) and have been given antibiotics I had it with my first in labour

Hi, I tested positive when pregnant with my son, I had normal delivery they are just extra cautious and will give medication often during labour

Do your own research too. Dr Sara wickham has a great book.

Its amazing youve be found to have strep now. They will give you antibiotics whilst in labour and possibly keep you in for a extra few days to monitor baby incase antibiotics are needed .
I had strep with my first and it wasnt found till he was born and fighting for his life so its not so much of a worry if you know ahead of time as they will be able to manage it

Did any of you get treated antibiotics for it before labour as well?

you likely won’t be treated before Labour unless the in infection is in your bladder.

hi yes I did I’m currently on a weeks course of antibiotics x

Hi Lauren.
I tested positive for strep B.
Have you informed the midwife? They will usually put a sticker on your notes at the front.
Having strep B can affect some of your birth plans I.e if you wish to have baby at home if you wanted to be administered antibiotics. You could continue with this plan but then go to hospital for your baby to be monitored. Depending where you are, it can be between 12-24 hour monitoring of heart rate and temperature. They don’t automatically give antibiotics to your baby.
When you go into active labour, you can be given antibiotics to help minimise the infection transfer.
The most commonly used is penicillin based which is administered 4 hourly and if allergic then again dependent on where you are, this is usually 12 hourly.
You can still have a water birth as you can have them administered via over drip and then get in the water but just don’t get the cannula wet.
I can’t talk from experience as unfortunately I didn’t receive antibiotics

Following on… I didn’t receive antibiotics in time so my baby was monitored. She’s absolutely fine.
The risks of strep b to baby are meningitis, pneumonia or sepsis.
You can find out more information on this on the national strep b website.
Apparently they don’t retest at 37 weeks; you’re just administered antibiotics. 37 week testing is additional pregnancies when you’ve been positive with strep b in a previous pregnancy
