It’s learned but it also takes a steady hand so it will come easier to some people than others. You have to want to spend the time learning how to write each letter and be more careful when writing. I have multiple styles, my sloppy fast style, my board writing, my I need to this to be clear style lol.
I have a friend who took a calligraphy class and does it as a side job now. You can watch videos about how to do it. I have my children fix their writing when it turns sloppy and they aren’t forming the letters correctly. I’m trying to let them create their own style of writing as handwriting is individual and unique.

Preschool teacher here! Practice makes better every time and i can tell who practices writting at home and who doesnt. As a lefty myself, we do tend to have slightly worse handwriting, but i mostly attribute that to often having to learn writing from a rightie.
Exercises to strengthen hands like manipulating objects such as paint brushes, clay, and scissors all help build nice strong writing muscles too!

It’s definitely learned. My grandmother would have me practice my penmanship for like two hours a day starting at like four.😭😭 it was crucial at the time but now I have beautiful handwriting and I can read and write in cursive so I think it’s definitely worth it!!

In college I had a professor call out my handwriting in class (I went to school for production design and writing for drafting is important) and I took it to heart and now I have pretty flawless capital letter writing. I find it’s easier for people to read all caps anyway.

Comes w practice. No one is born with nice handwriting that comes with years and years of pen on paper just trying to find your own style, and then perfect it and make it nice. It’s like asking is a good nail tech born or made? Is a good hairdresser born or made? Both made w years and years of practice. Some people have the genetic creative/musical abilities but they still need to practice to get good even though it comes naturally if that makes sense.

I think it’s both. Primarily I think it’s a learned skill because even if the first person to write in a certain font style was originally just born with that ability to write that way, others throughout time have learned to replicate it 🤷♀️

Honestly I don't know, our mom had pretty handwriting, mine is good and my older brothers is bad 🤷
thank you! That’s helpful. My handwriting is not great but I’m trying to ensure my children’s look better than mine.
would you let your kids practice? I’m all about practice but I know some people may think that’s harsh these days.

I used to say I have ugly boy handwriting but now I know it’s cuz I have dysgraphia (a learning disability). So I mean I can practice all day long, it would not change.
Edited to add that this is why typing should be an accommodation because not everyone can write well. If you think that it’s ableist.

Its learned but its also a trait that not every person or child will value. Personality I write small, fast and messy, but it is at least straight and legible for the most part. I can read and write cursive but my signature is a sloppy "doctor's signature " thats basically a scribble.
I'm an artist and I've noticed that artists tend to either have very nice penmanship or barely legible like mine 😂
that’s something to think about. If it’s a value then they might try and have neat writing.

I think it's a skill, but I don't think that means everyone can have beautiful handwriting. Being artistic is a skill but I can tell you now, no matter HOW MUCH I PRACTICE I will never be able to draw beautifully or to paint nicely. It's the same for handwriting.
I am left handed and I destroy most greetings cards 😂 I have been told my handwriting is nice though but I am not sure if I agree.
my bff in high school was a lefty and she wrote beautifully. My writing on the other hand is decent, but nothing to brag about lol
