Okay I have a sweet Bernese mountain dogs and a 1 year old. My 1 year old is exploring and her new thing is to go straight to the dog bowls in the kitchen. Either, I have to put the bowls up which I hate to do because then my other baby girl can’t have water or I have to block my baby off from the kitchen with the baby gate and I am still blocking my dog off from water. We do have dog bowl in our bedroom for water at night. I am trying to teach my baby “eww that’s yucky” when she goes near the dog bowls if they are on the ground. Any suggestions?

Yes, as a matter fact, I have an idea I’ve seen it used on me in the past and with other children and what you do if you go buy a baby gate and you put it in front of whatever doorway, your dog food, bowls, and like mine is in the kitchen, so I’ll put a baby get up there when he starts walking and crawling so he will see out of the dog food That is just a suggestion

so we do have a baby gate in between our kitchen and living room and that helps but I just feel like I am restricting my dog from her food and water.

My Doberman refuses to drink water out of a bowl, so thankfully he just comes and asks for water from the tub when he's thirsty, but we do have to pick up the food bowl. I give him about 30 minutes to eat and then I pick it up if there is food still in there. My son will 100% eat the dog food and think it is the yummiest snack ever. We've started feeding the dog when we eat so that he has ample time without worrying about his brother stealing his food

yeah I think we will just have to do something similar. What do you do about water bowls? My think it’s bath water for her to play in.

My niece LOVESSSS the water bowl😂 they have smaller dogs though so they made a barricade with the dining table chairs. Not sure how to prevent with bigger dogs, my lo isn’t mobile yet so I’ll have to figure something out with my bigger dogs too

for your specific issue you can get a cat buddy strap for the door, keeps it open enough for kitties to get through but not baby!

Nearly every child ive ever nannied has had a dog bowl obsession at one point or another and i fully expect my own son to do the same the second he starts crawling. The best thing i have ever found success with is a sensory bin. If baby wants to manipulate objects, let them! Let them splash in a sensory tub, manipulate fun sensory items, its what they were going for anyway lol
Every time your kiddo makes a break for the dog bowls, scoop them up, remind them that the bowls belong to the dog but they can play with this instead and then immedietly offer the sensory activity. If you're consistant eventually kiddo will just ask for the bins when they want to splash or play with something.

We have just kept telling our 1 yr old it's yucky or its for doggies only and she picked up pretty quick. If anything she will throw a ball in it but doesn't play with the water.

As soon as mine started crawling, I was very firm with her that the bowls were for the dog only, and redirected. The one time she got into the food bowl, she tasted a kibble, made the most disgusted face, then never crawled to it again. 😂 They’re just curious and sometimes the taste itself is enough to deter them!
