Omeprozole

Anyone’s LO on omeprozole for reflux? We’re on our 4th week of it and my 8wk old is still soooo fussy like he has trapped wind that’s causing his belly to hurt. Dr has prescribed another month supply and upped the dosage too 4.5ml now as he’s weighing 5kg but I’ve heard the higher doses can cause stomach discomfort 😩 can’t win lol. He’s also on his 4th week of neocate

My little boy is on omeprazole and neocate! It took about 6-8 weeks for everything to settle in and to see a real difference!
We had lots of trapped wind too until then, so we just did lots of massages and bicycle legs to help him when we could!

Have you got liquid or tablet form? My boy was on tablet form from roughly 8 weeks and his dose was relatively high and by the end of the fight he was on 20mg right up until he was about 11 months old and I started weaning him off it.

Are you using a thickener for the neocate? These formulas are so thin they definitely require a thickener to help lo take it comfortably such as carobel. This can be purchased in the pharmacy as it’s not a medication.

Our peads told us that the omeprazole treats the throat that’s received damage from the reflux and the thickener helps to keep the milk in stomach and prevent further damage to the throat. It does take about a month to start seeing the changes though and like Georgia says plenty baby massage and bicycle legs and warm baths. I always done my sons massages with him lay on his left side as the lady who checks the hips told me that was prime for gas relief. It done us well.

did his bowel movements become less? I was told sometimes they only go a toilet once a day as the formula is broken down so much, there isn’t much waste afterwards x

we have the 10mg tablet that I dissolve in 10ml water.
The dietician did mention the carobel to me if he’s still refluxing which he isn’t really and he is holding the neocate down suprisingly as like you said it is so thin. I was worried about it causing constipation for him it I added it when he’s already taking it fine as he still seems so uncomfortable when it comes to his stomach area 😩
But because he’s gaining weight and no blood/mucus in his dirty nappies .. no one seems overly concerned x

It does take a while for omeprazole to take affect for them but it can cause stomach discomfort unfortunately. My daughter done so well on omeprazole but my son didn’t take to it at all so we’re on Neocate and carobel which has been a godsend. He’s honestly like a different baby now x

it could be he is now silent refluxing which you’ll never really know if he is because the sick will come up so far and then drop back into the acid in his stomach. We initially had gaviscon and that was horrendous for constipation. We never really experienced constipation with omeprazole and carobel as a pair ever really and only some trapped wind until everything was settled in his stomach then he was like a completely different baby.

Nobody will be overly concerned because their charts are charting. But you know your baby you know when they need extra help.

I would definitely try the carobel for a few days on the thin instructions and see if it helps remove the fussiness. If it does then I’d say he’s actually got silent reflux now aswell.

Sending so much love because it really puts a damper on your newborn phase.

as of the omeprazole if it weren’t agreeing with him, how would I know?
I’m going to get some of the carobel tomorrow. Is it still ok to give even if he’s not sucking up any milk anymore? X

Avatar

I’m going to get some carobel tomorrow. Do you think it will still be ok and help him even though he isn’t sicking milk up? And would you say to still keep him on the omeprozole but maybe the lower dose alongside the carobel.
It’s so hard to know what to do.

He’s actually seeing a chiropractor tomorrow as i had a quick delivery with him under 20 minutes & I’m not sure if he is also holding onto tension but it be good to see if they can feel tension in his stomach area too and can help with releasing wind 😞 x

it would just be going by his symptoms tbh. It’s kinda trial and error with all of this stuff. If he’s not actually being sick it seems like the omeprazole could be working. As far as I know, omeprazole and carobel shouldn’t be used together. There are some that are really bad out on both, my boy was one of them but having both made him so sore and unhappy so we stuck to the carobel as it’s worked better for him x

seems like everyone’s advise is different in terms of medical. But we have been under paediatrics since birth and we’re giving omeprazole and carobel together which caused no difficulties for us and actually only made our situation better, my son had silent reflux and was never sick his symptoms where fussiness on the bottle, arching back and inconsolable crying.

I’d work them both together to begin with for a month, once his body has improved and rested , I’d start to wean off the omeprazole over the course of a week or two as his dose is still quite low and then remain on carobel until after weaning when you feel you can wean the carobel away aswell. If you see things take a strike for the worst id put it back because his body won’t be ready yet xx

We couldn’t get on with it! Kept being in an acid battle!! And it was hell coming off it. But she’s settled now I’m just coping with the sick xx

Avatar

Have you heard of the acid battle? This can happen week 4-6 and can basically make it seem like its not working at all anymore. Essentially what happens is the body starts to produce more acid to try and counter the omeprazole. It’s just an adjustment period, a hard one but it only lasts around 5-7 days and then it can happen every time the dosage is upped x

Avatar

to be honest, he was already an every 2-5 day kinda guy with no issues, so we haven’t seen them decrease any further. His paediatrician said as long as he isn’t uncomfortable, they are a good consistency (like toothpaste) and it isn’t more than 7-10 days then it’s fine!
