Weetabix for breakfast

So every morning we give our 3 year old 2 weetabix with milk for breakfast but he's started asking for more because hes still hungry so we give him 1 more (about 7:30am), at about 10 he'll have a bit of fruit like a banana and then at 12 he'll have his lunch, usually a sandwich or a bit of pasta. He then has some more fruit at about half 2, maybe a handful of Strawberries and then at 6 he'll have his tea. He's a healthy weight, in line with his growth chart for height and weight but I've noticed a thing recently saying 3 weetabix is too much for a young child. What does everyone think?

Could you start giving him some fruit instead of an extra weetabix? Its not harming him to have another.

My girl usually has 3 weetabix, fruit and two yoghurts! So definitely not too much. If he’s hungry, feed him :) x

Can you give porridge? More fibre and slow releasing carbs. Or do overnight oats then add to the weetabix in the morning 🙂

Give some yoghurt, fruit or egg with it instead. Too many carbs at once. Wheatabix does have some added sugar and salt.

Why are you just giving him weetabix? Why not a few things like fruit with his weetabix, or other things apart from weetabix… I feel like having the same thing every day is only going to cause problems like picky eating. There’s so many breakfast options

I think rather than giving more (which there is really no issue with) I would bulk out with protein fruits and healthy fats. A side of whole fat preferably organic yogurt, with some berries, say. Carbs alone (even with some milk) really aren’t very filling. They just cause a blood sugar spike and then drop (which 🟰 hungry again!)

My almost 1 year old has two and has yogurt with it

Okay so my 3 & 2yo eat about the same but:
- pre breakfast: banana, mandarin & milk
- breakfast: big bowl protein oats with peanut butter mixed in
- morning snacks: smoothie, savoury muffin (sometimes an apple)
- lunch: can range from pasta, sausage rolls, chicken & sweet potato nuggets with other veg, mini pizzas etc
- afternoon snacks incl: pea snaps, yogurt & fruit, oat cookies, oat bars etc.
- dinner: similar to lunch
- after dinner: banana or blueberries & milk.

Sometimes they’ll still ask for more of something specific (my 3yo loves oats and asks “do you want oats?” When he wants more or even after dinner).

They’re growing and using up so much brain power learning all the time & they don’t stop moving until they’re asleep so I usually give them what they want. Almost everything is homemade so I know what’s going into it but my kids are in a healthy weight range for their age/height. If he asks for but not eating the extra you give then try adding other things

It’s ‘fast’ carbs that’s why he’s hungry so quickly. Just add protein and fat and try to replace weetabix with ‘long’ carbs

I honestly cannot thank you all enough for the info and advice, I had no idea that weetabix weren't filling (i personally don't eat them) and I'll try mixing up his breakfast a bit with a range of different things. Much appreciation mamas 💜

This is useful for breakfast ideas, and has useful info in it. I was looking the other day for ideas 😊

I give my little girl 2 with milk sometimes we stick fruit or peanut butter in it. Sometime she’ll still be hungry and will have a piece of toast and a yoghurt for breakfast! She doesnt eat a huge amount for lunch or dinner. She’s just a breakfast girly.

2 to start then another if he still hungry is fine.
If your worried about him eating 3 you could try giving him a couple of other bits with his breakfast. For example when my daughter was 3 i would give her a what she called "picky breakfast" which consisted of half a slice of toast, either a small amount of cereal or porridge and some fruit usually berries. I would mix it uo each day sometime substitute some fruit for yoghurt etc. Then she would have some crackers a couple of hours after for her snack.

Sometimes my boy has 5 weatabix for breakfast 🤣🤣 I didn't realise 3 was considered too much. He is tall and lean (aged 3.5) and tbh just tends to eat more earlier in the day... so I follow his lead and don't stress about it x

Hello? Is this me, did I write this post???
My son is the same and every morning he will have a two tier breakfast 😂 so Weetabix and toast or fruit, maybe Weetabix and more Weetabix. It is probably the least offensive cereal there is and he will have 2+1, sometimes 2+2. If he is hungry then I say let him eat it. At least he isn't saying he's hungry and asking for chocolate or sweets!

I would offer the same advice to you. Fruit + carb is just sugar on sugar- it’s not filling and will make them get hungry fast. Definitely good to balance out the meal with protein and fat! It will make them fuller much longer and mood more stable without the auger crash!

Give a balanced meal with fruit, carb, and protein. To balance this meal out, I would add more protein, which would be yogurt on top or look for other ideas. Protein keeps you fuller for longer

Update; I've been giving 2 with some peanut butter and fruit mixed in and then offering some yoghurt as well (just natural as he's not keen on greek) and he seems to be full after that! If he's not I've been giving him a boiled egg as well because he is OBSESSED with eggs
