First of all Congratulations! 🥰🥰NIPT is a choice! You are definitely not a bad mum if you do not want to do the NIPT test 💕 What you should understand is that even if both you and your husband are perfectly healthy you may still have a child with genetic abnormalities. It’s like the lotto and you and your partner have no influence over certain genetic conditions that your child may have such as Trisomy 21. The NIPT test is used to pick up on certain genetic conditions such as the above and can help give you guidance on next steps etc by getting you in touch with a genetics councillor early. It can also allow you to understand more about your child’s condition if you do receive an abnormal result. Overall if you choose not to get the NIPT test it is completely your decision as most genetic abnormalities do have soft markers which can be picked up during the 12 and 20 week scans. Most people do the NIPT test as a peace of mind to help them not have any surprises later on.

With my first I didn’t do the NIPT, because I felt no matter what the baby was like we’d love him the same and still have him. There’s a morphology scan around 20 weeks anyway, it’s a detailed check of the baby’s body and organs and also the placenta and fluid. For me that was enough.

I also think that if it's a cost issue which nowadays is relatively normal in costs of living crisis, there is a Medicare covered version that is reduced only to certain / most serious abnormalities. That could be the way to go :) ask your gp.
