Has anyone expecting a baby gone on a walk with the pram (empty) and the dog?

I’ve seen it all over social media getting your dog used to walking with the pram and I think it’s a great idea! But I just can’t bring myself to go out on a walk with an empty pram!

Does anyone have any advice? I know I’m probably being silly but given all the comments I get since being pregnant, I only expect them to get worse when babies here!

I haven’t done yet as only 19 weeks but I do plan to nearer the time. I imagine neighbours etc may approach and think we’ve had the baby! 🤭 still going to do it though as we have an Australian Shepherd so a big dog and I think it would be good practice for him xx

I’m one of those who has walked back from the nursery with an empty pram 😂 got a couple of comments from the elderly saying I was missing something, but nothing weird looks. I’d go for it!

Just cover it over with a blanket and then noone is peering in and wondering why 🤣🤣🤣

I didn’t, but in all honesty since I’ve had my baby I’ve barely walked with the pram I have maybe done it twice. I put her in a carrier, it’s easier than juggling the pram and leads etc.

I hadn’t even thought about the walk back from nursery, that’s a good point! Thank you!

I have done it and would 100% recommend doing it! Not only to get the dog used to walking next to the pram but also I’ve never pushed a pram before so it was helpful for me too! The first all was really tricky because she kept trying to walk in front of the pram and I couldn’t see her, but after the 3rd short walk, she was brilliant!x

comments like this make me want to put a creepy doll in the pram 😂 but thank you this is helpful!

I wish I’d done this with mine! My dogs a bit of a nervous one when it comes to bikes and things so the pram was a big thing for her, when she got over her fear she had to learn to stay out of the way! ( a few paws run over in the process 🫣)
Honestly do what’s best for you and your fur baby, I think it’s a great idea and a new baby is a big change for our pets!
It’ll make your life 10x easier if your dog knows how to walk with a pram when you’re trying to manage a newborn

We did it a couple of times, more for us than our dog to check he wouldn’t walk into it 🥲 he was fine with it but realistically i’ve just worn her in a carrier since about 4 weeks old x

I will be doing this with mine 😊 it is only the same as getting them used to new furniture etc in the house. If anyone asks just explain you are training the dog ready for baby arriving x

Avatar

I did , and I also played crying sounds anything to Desensitise him. It really helped in my opinion

Avatar

I did it lots as not only to get the dogs used to it, but also me. It was a lot so juggle in the beginning and it really helped once bab was here feeling confident getting everyone out the door! X

Yes I did this. Although top tip, tie the lead to the side of the pram, long enough so dog can sniff and wee but not so long that they can get in front of the pram. Then as long as your dog isn't too pully, you can push with one hand. One person said they did more slings than prams, but I found picking up dog poo really tricky with a sling!

I did as my dog is nervous of anything that moves - we drove it to a park we knew would be empty - still ended up chatting with someone who tried to look in the pram and we had to explain what we were doing and he was very understanding😂

If it’s something you want to do, just do it😅

Yes I did and I was worried I would look silly haha but it was actually fine! Our doggo took quite well to waking next to it and when someone asked (which only happened like once or twice) I just explained I was getting the dog used to it!

Avatar

I’ve just been out and so glad I did, like you say it was a learning curve for me too!

Avatar

amazing!! Much rather I risk people judging me whilst I’m not overwhelmed with a baby and the dog! At least this way if you need to stop and regroup you can without worrying about baby too!xx

Avatar

I have a baby and my pram is empty most of the time I use it because he hates being in it 😅 go for it, I doubt anyone would say anything and if they did you've got a valid reason.

We did this, and put an elephant shaped door stopper in the pram to make it feel real. Was so good until someone stopped us to see the baby 🫠

If u have à park close by is not a biggie! Usually parks are 2 min walk, and in our days we don’t look observe each other like before! People won’t even notice u don’t have a baby there, trust me!

Here’s a new angle for you, as I used to feel the same way… i walk to pick my toddler up from nursery, I walk over there with an empty pram and I see so many others too… it will feel weird to you because it’s not your ‘normal’ yet. But honestly nobody ever stops to ask where my baby is or even looks at me. I remember going out for that first walk with my baby in it, i was so nervous. I gripped the pram so tightly and wouldn’t even face the road at the pedestrian crossing until cars had stopped. Trust me it will become your norm and you won’t even think twice

Avatar

how far along where you when you started doing these practice walks, in 29 weeks now and have 2 dogs so will have to do double the practice walks to get them both used to it separately xx

Avatar

I have as my staffy is a twit need to go again as he's not realised not to get near wheels yet x

Avatar

I think I was around 32 weeks! But go at your own pace! If you feel better to start early then you 100% should!! We only started later because we kept the pram at my moms house until then, there is no right or wrong time xx
