How to get a diagnosis for possible adhd

Has anyone managed to get their 6 year old assessed for ADHD even when school doesn’t see the same things we see at home? It runs in my family and my daughter shows all the same signs my brother did before his diagnosis. Not sure where to start if school won’t help me – has anyone been through this?

I’m going through the same problem, it’s so tough. He masks at school so they won’t do anything. I’m lucky I’ve got DLA for him not because it gives him the disabled verification

You may be able to get a referral via the GP it doesn’t have to go through school.

The GP won’t refer, it has to go through the school. They said to me they see them for 10 minutes while the school sees them every day for years

I’m going through the same with my little boy , he does show he has a short attention span at school and I asked the gp for an adhd assessment for him , he’s 6

On the other hand my eldest she’s just turned 9 and was a heavy masker especially in school and I pushed and pushed for an ndc referral through the doctors but she was denied several times we ended up doing the right to choose pathway and she was diagnosed with autism a month before her birthday and now doing an adhd referral also

I went to the GP but they told me to go through school so I've sent an email to school and spoken to his teachers before the holidays but he masks it at school so they don't see it. Hopefully I'll hear back in September, desperate for some help to understand him and my husband who hasn't been diagnosed but definitely has it better

My gp did do the referral but they declined it as they need another professional point of view. School would just say “ she’s perfectly normal “ so I give up trying with them , like my mum had the same issue with my younger brother at the exact same school. It took her years to get his diagnosis and he got it at the age of 10( he’s now 17) my mum even spoke to his nurse and told her all about my daughter . She said and I quote “ seeing and dealing with my granddaughter is like dealing with my son all over again “ x

Speak with your councils SEND team if the school aren’t willing to refer. Evidence everything you can - make diaries of even the smallest things and gather as much as possible to support yourself.

I dint know you could do that ! Thank you ! x

I would ask the gp to do the right to choose pathway , as that’s what I did with my eldest daughter as they denied her I think 4 times ,
Record everything and you can give and show it to the doctors, write down everything that you’ve noticed like what triggers it could be , how hyperactive they are , if they sleep well , all of that and when they’d go back to school try and have a chat with them or the senco and ask for more help and support they can give , definitely consider talking to the send team tho

Oh she doesn’t sleep well . That was the very first sign and that was from 2 years old !! It was so bad it gotten to a point where me and my mum was taking turns having her . So one night I would do it then the next my mum would do it . But that was all when we was living with my mum x

That’s exactly like both of my children, I have a family worker through my local council as I got to breaking point of I need help

I done a managing challenging behaviour course that was recommended
We’re currently doing a sleep diary so when I have my next senco meeting I can go this is it

My daughter’s sleep regression started about 2/3 and my sons was after he turned 4

I feel your pain! 🥺 my 6yr old boy masks it at school! I addressed it with SENCO originally where he said he’s fidgety and always on the move etc. Told me to go to the GP and start referral so I done all that they sent forms off to the school for him to fill out his side of referral which thankfully he has done but he’s now not helping my son when at school and saying he doesn’t see what we see 🤦‍♀️ he doesn’t sleep until 11pm and then is awake throughout the night at least every other hour and sleepwalks. Behaviour is challenging, climbing up door frames, running around constantly and just hyperactive. He doesn’t have an attention span at all. He was born not breathing for 4 minutes and had really high infection marker and had all sorts of medication. His dad is suspected ADHD and his cousin & uncle have it too. It’s hard not being listened to! Always here if need/want a chat ❤️

My son has always struggled with sleep especially going to sleep he can't stay still long enough until he's worn himself out. And the holidays have made his sleep worse as we haven't stuck to a routine, can't wait to get back to a routine and hopefully hear back from school 🤞🏽

Go to your gp and request a referal through right to choose.
We didnt know about this before we paid private to my daughters asessment. We have hers coming up in a few weeks. We went private because she masks at school and they wouldnt even send a referal through due to back log
