Advice with Grandparents looking after children.

Long story

My parents were looking after my two boys yesterday who are 2 and 1.

They were at soft play and this older girl was sprinting through the soft play and ran straight into my 2 year old, he rolled on the floor and hit his head. My dad comforted my two year old as he was very upset and they got ready to leave straight away. As they were leaving my sister who was there saw the girl with her parents and my sister went over to the parents to say “ that their girl needs to just be careful where she’s running as her two year old nephew was hurt by her”

My partner got very upset that isn’t wasn’t my dad who spoke to the parents as if my partner was there he would’ve been the one to have spoken to the parents about the accident and would’ve hoped for an apology.

My parents didn’t understand why we was upset about this and said we was blowing it out of proportion and that it’s wrong how we feel and it doesn’t matter about speaking to the parents of the girls.

My partner is very head strong and protective of our boys and if they get hurt by another child he would always go say something to the parents (nothing rude though) my partner is angry at my parents because they didn’t do that, it was my little sister who did.

Are we wrong for being upset with my parents about this? As it’s now caused an issue between my parents and my partner, just as they were all getting along.

I’d say in this type of situation whether or not you speak to the girl’s parents is down to personal choice and down to your own personal style.

It sounds like your son was well looked after. That is the main thing.

Not everyone will react the same as you do in any situation.

For me this is not worth being angry at your parents for. Sure they reacted differently to how you would have but neither approach is wrong or right.

Everyone has different ways of dealing with situations like this and some people don't feel comfortable approaching others about things like. So many accidents happen at soft play and children are always running around. I'm sure the little girl didn't meant to hurt your child.

I'd be grateful that your parents comforted your son so well and we're prepared to leave so quickly. There is no need for you to be angry or fall out with them over this.

Sounds like maybe there is some deeper issues here, rather than just an accident at soft play. Wishing you all the best with this x

I agree with the others, you can’t be angry with them because they didn’t react how you would. They cared for the child and that’s the main thing.. this will happen a lot in play centres - it’s usually never intentional and no apologies usually needed either.

Not worth falling out over. How your partner reacts is different to them, and that’s ok.
Maybe your parents don’t like confrontation and decided to just leave instead.
As long as your child is looked after and cared for, that’s all I’d be concerned about. Some people don’t have any help from grandparents so you’re lucky they take them places and care for them.

My priority would be checking the child was ok. Beyond that, possibly speaking to the girl’s parents, but probably not, especially if it had been an accident. Either way, I probably wouldn’t fall out with my parents over it. However it’s 100% your choice (and your partner’s) about how you parent, so just keep in mind that if there are important things like this, you should communicate with your parents about how you’d like them addressed, for the future.
