What size baby clothes to pack for hospital bag

Hey all
Last week my baby girl was estimated to be weighing around 7lb 6oz (36 weeks)
Next week they have planned for me to be induced at 39 weeks
What size baby clothes would you recommend for the hospital bag?

My little girl was estimated to be over 8 lbs but was born 7lbs 9, and my husband had to nip to the big Tesco down the road from the hospital to get newborn size, as the 0-1/0-3 sizes were way too big. Even the new born size was a bit big on her TBF haha. But maybe take a couple of each size so you're covered?

I’d do mostly newborn but bring at least a couple of the next size up just in case. That’s what I’ve done. Although… all of mine ended up in the hospital an additional week afterwards because of high jaundice.

I had several growth scans that all estimated baby would be small (max 6lbs) so I packed newborn size. She ended up coming out 8lb 1oz and spent the first 5 hours completely naked because no clothes fit her and we had to wait until I was back on the ward after my section for my husband to nip home and bring back some bigger sizes!!
I'd take a mix but wouldn't bother with too many newborn tbh, 1 month or first size would be better.

I brought newborn size for my twins but I should have brought preemie, they weren't premature they were 6 pounds and the newborn size was huge. I recommend bringing two sizes.

We did newborn and 0-3

He ended up being 5 pounds 8 ounces at birth 🥰🥹🥺

Newborn fit for at least a few weeks

Get one newborn and one 0-3.

But even at 9lb 8oz 21.5 in my babies fit in newborn when they were born.

Avatar

Yea my baby was suppose to be 7 plus and was only 5.5. I had no clothes that fit 😢 needed premie so mom and sis went and purchased.

Combination of newborn and 0-1m depending on what your last ultrasound they mentioned. I wasn’t large full term so I thought my baby was going to be 5-6lbs but she surprised us at 7.6oz so you never know! Pack to be prepared worst case you don’t need it. Sleepers are best. Plus first couple days you wnat most skin to skin so you won’t be using the clothes much until time to head home.

I’d bring a good mix. My oldest was 9lbs and fit 0-3 right away, my middle was 8lbs and wore newborn for literally like three days and then we were in 0-3 clothes, but my youngest was 6lbs and we didn’t move him to 0-3 until he hit about 10 weeks old and weighed a little over 10lbs but he wore premie clothes those first few weeks

We didn’t wear clothes a lot at home honestly, not for the first few weeks, it was a lot of skin to skin mostly

My LB was measuring big and was 8lb 10. His torso is very long so he went straight into 0-1 as newborn wasn’t long enough

Avatar

I brought 6 outfits 😅 2 premie, 2 newborn, 2 0-3month

Avatar

Some companies run smaller than others plus babies wet themselves a lot, so extra is good .

Pack both! I was induced at 36 weeks. I had gotten her hospital outfit in a 0-3. She came early, and my boyfriend how to run home to get a newborn bc I hadn’t packed it. I would pack both just in case!

Avatar

Took 0-3 both times and that’s it and will again for this baby… first was born at 39 weeks weighing 7lb 14, second 38+4 weeks weighing 8lb 11… was a tad big on my first born however it was fine… I didn’t mind them being big… lots of room for stretching and feeling comfortable in my opinion… my second grew out of 0-3 in a month… each to there own x

Avatar

I’m taking 3 sets of newborn clothes & 3 sets of 0-1 month. Newborn covers until about 8lb in most of the clothes I have and 0-1 covers until 10lb so hopefully they’ll be fine 🤣 x

Avatar

I would get some newborn & 0-1! Unless you want to wash them before leave them in original packaging so you can refund them! Good luck mama 🫶🏼

Our first born was 7lb,9oz and didn’t fit into newborn. Our second born was 8lb,9oz and didn’t fit into 0-3m.
Our third, I’m packing newborn and 0-3m because my OB said last week baby was weighing approx 7lb.

Avatar

Our baby weighed 7lbs but was long! Newborn was too small, 0-1 worked for a few weeks. A selection is the way to go

Avatar

Accidentally said newborn but I’d pack all, I packed 0-3 only and ended up having to send someone to go buy tiny baby and bring them into the hospital for him

Avatar

Both my children one weighing 7lb10oz and one 9lb5oz wore first size/newborn/0-1 month (they’re all basically the same but different shop sizes really vary) for the first 3 weeks of their life. I packed 0-3 both times just incase and never used them.

Avatar

My baby is measuring big so I’ll bring 0-3 month size clothes. That’s what my eldest wore when he was born. It should be fine.

Avatar

We had a mix of sizes. Delivered at 39+4 (I think), average weight but 75% for height. He didn't fit in NB, and only just in 0-1 months depending on brand.

Avatar

Just take 0-3 and fold the sleeves. They will fit them perfectly 2 days later anyway. It is insane how fast they grow in the beginning.

Avatar

My last baby was 9lb2oz at birth and fit into newborn for a couple of weeks so I would say newborn. Different brands are a bit different though, I don’t find sizes are standard

Avatar

Both newborn and 0-1/0-3 month.

Everyone told me not to bother with newborn clothes and they rarely fit them anyway. But my baby was so cute and cozy in newborn clothes and I enjoyed having clothes on him that he wasn’t swimming in.

Also accuracy of size estimates decrease the further along the pregnancy is, so the baby could be bigger or smaller than anticipated.

Avatar

Take a mixture and pack double what you think you will need. Hubby was forever going back and forth with washing, new clothes etc. We spent a few days in hospital.

Avatar

Every brand of clothes is different in size even though they say the same "size" on them. But for that weight id say 0-1

Avatar

0-1 worked well for both of mine from birth for the first few weeks. First 7 pound 13 and second 7 pound 3.

Avatar

I packed 0-1 for my first - 9lb 8oz (fit perfect, but had to ask family to buy more as I only owned 3 lol)

I packed 0-1 for my second, and one 0-3- she was 11lb 4oz. (Had to ring my mum to go collect more 0-3 sleepsuits as 0-3 just fit)

Avatar

My 7oz 12 baby only just fit into some newborn clothes so I would take a couple options just to be sure. But I think going bigger is better than being too small x

Avatar

1mnth barely fit mine. Had to ask my mil to bring 0-3

Avatar

Definitely 0-3 months. My daughter never fit the newborn size she was 9 pounds. Some brands run larger some smaller but definitely don’t only do newborn unless you have a premie or measure smaller

Avatar

Both mine went straight into up to 1 month clothes. They were 8lb 13oz and 9lb 2oz.

Avatar

My baby was 8.5lbs and fit in her newborn outfits in the hospital. I did have one 0-3mo outfit with me just in case. I'd say newborn usually will fit those first few days but never hurts to have one bigger option just in case.

Avatar

We knew we were going to have a long baby, so we didn't bother getting any newborn stuff he went straight into 0-3m... yes was a little big as they have the newborn scrunch but he was in them for 2 months before going up a size. No regrets!
