Tips for newly diagnosed ADHD mum 🤍

Hey! I am a mum to a 3 year old little girl, this week I was diagnosed with adhd after a year long process to figure out what was going on with me! I am currently waiting to start medication but would love to know what other mums do to help themselves stay on top of things? I struggle a lot with organising, keeping track of appointments, remembering to reply to messages/ emails, and general brain fog! It's such a relief to finally have some answers and a good plan in place to help me get on top of things but would love to know if there is anything else I could do while waiting for meds that might help me day to day? 🩷

Everything goes in the calendar on my phone, with timed reminders!

For me only important things like appointments go in my calendar (on my phone, synced with computer), if I do block time or reminders for water etc then everything gets forgotten. So making sure I don't overwhelm myself with the calendar.

Work out your flows, so like in morning I wake up my girls (both adhd too, and my youngest ASD as well), get their uniforms for them, and then make their lunch, while making lunch I do my meds, and their meds. But I follow a similar flow everyday.

With clothes, I have given up on folding. I have tubs for my tops, pants etc. As I would normally live out of clean washing baskets I just changed over to a similar but more organised way.

In someways, I would just embrace the chaos, ensure the main things are covered, and for the rest go with the flow.

How to adhd on YouTube is helpful. Also try out systems, and if they don't work, try a new one. We are very good at working out systems, implementing them however, can be tricky.

Putting important things in the calendar and having a widget on the Home Screen so I can always see it. But to echo what was said it’s about finding your balance, too many things in the calendar and everything gets ignored for me

For organization I try to constantly remind myself “don’t put it down, put it away” I so often found myself just putting clothes down instead of in the hamper for example.

If there is a time of day where you regularly have a little free time that’s when I go through all my texts that I’ve ignored over the past 24 hours.

Meds can take a while to figure out sometimes. So try to give yourself grace in the meantime. Personally just having that diagnosis helped me start to take notice of my day to day life and to start figuring out what does or doesn’t work for me

If you're newly diagnosed, you probably have systems already in place to get you through. They might not be optimal. You probably already notice that you can only get things done if 1) you put stress on yourself, like really get yourself worked up about it 2) it's gamified or you love it 3) doing it with someone else (body double). Love and fear releases adrenaline in your brain which is a stimulant. And as you know giving a stimulant to someone with ADHD releases dopamine which is the chemical that motivates to do the thing. That's why without meds, only those three strategies really work. I do recommend watching the "How to ADHD" channel on YouTube.

I’m currently waiting for an assessment I’ve only been on the list for a few months so probs in for a long wait- I’m the opposite where always arrive for everything too early because I’m worried about being late, feeling the need to reply to everyone asap 🤣🥴 I take a tonne of vitamins including magnesium and I find that helps a lot- I’ve recently finished a pack and forgot to get more & I can tell a difference already, I’m back to being snappy, tired & overwhelmed with everything- low moods also. Deffo try them in the mean time x

Calendar your tasks that are important and timers. 15 minutes works best for me as I get bored after that 🤣
