Iron tablets making me sick

Is anyone else on iron tablets?

I’ve been prescribed them because they found I have low iron stores on my booking appt blood tests

I’ve been taking them first thing on an empty stomach with a single slice of toast to try and minimise the nausea

But today and again about 4-5 days ago after about an hour I have to throw up.

Is anyone else struggling with this and found a way to overcome it?

I’m on them but I’m also on xonvea for morning sickness so I think it’s helping to eliminate extra nausea. Iron tablets biggest side effect is sickness/nausea so maybe ask your GP if you can take anything along side it x

Hey, What tablets are you taking? I was taking ferrous fermarate and they made me feel so unwell light headed dizzy and sick, so I had to stop them.

My ferrous sulfate say not to take them with food, but to wait 30-60 mins before eating. Maybe it's not mixing well with your slice of toast? I have been recommended having orange juice at the same time as taking the pill to aid absorption. Overall they're not great on our digestive systems 😕

I had to take mine right before bed last time

Not sure on the iron levels, but a lot of people swear by the Spatone iron sachets, apple flavour. I take them anyway and they just taste like juice. I don’t think you’d be able to get on prescription but if the normal iron tablets aren’t working for you might be something to try? They say to have 2x sachets for pregnancy x

Ferrous sulfate made me sick, ferrous fumarate was better on my stomach. They say to take on an empty stomach but it really messed my gut up - take an hour after eating instead with 1000mg of vitamin c to boost absorption!

They were horrible for me on an empty stomach too. Midwife suggested a second option would be to have a fibrous breakfast then take it about an hour later and that seems to help the sickness. Ferrous fumarate is meant to be easier on the stomach than sulphate too. Iron levels haven’t budged though 🤣
