Potentially facing homelessness

I currently live with family members, theres myself, my husband and our 2 children. however the house is over crowded.
I over heard my family members talking the other night about how they just want to move into a small flat just themselves, and they're going to speak to me about it soon. They havent approached me about it yet, but I completely understand them wanting to do this, living with them was supposed to be temporary, but due to a health condition i had to stop working for a while (back at work now) so our savings got used, and we recently had a surprise baby, so plans to buy a house went out the window, and with rental prices sky-rocketing thats no longer an option either. I have been on the council housing register since 2018, in band 3, and havent got anywhere close to getting a property, the local mp even got involved for us, as we were originally told we would be on the list 3-5 years max, but now they're telling us 10 years! But the council just fobbed us off. But now it looks like I've run out of options and have no where to go. Does anyone know what the council will do if I report us homeless, im terrified of being separated from my husband and being put into a women and children shelter. Please no harsh judgement, ive been trying for years to get us our own house but nothing i try ever works. im devastated that my children will have to go through this
