We're still swaddling our almost 4-month-old baby because at night he frantically rubs his face until he wakes up if his hands are free. We've tried leaving his hands free, but after 3 minutes he starts rubbing again. When he's swaddled, he manages to free his hands during his active sleep cycles and rubs his head and scratches himself until he bleeds with his nails. We apply cream several times a day because he has eczema and dry skin. Has anyone else experienced this? And how did it resolve itself?

Yes. 2 out of my 3 kids have severe eczema and do this at night time. To relieve the itching it requires a strict skin routine and keeping the nails filed short. As instructed by our dermatologist: bathe daily to keep away infections, moisturize and apply ointments immediately after bath (and moisturize/apply medications in the morning as well), and only wear cotton clothing. Hope this helps you and let me know if you have any questions. I’ve been through hell and back with my babies and we’ve cracked the code; now their skin is flawless.

My daughter didn’t have it that severely but I used the yellow raw African shea butter on her every single night right after her bath while her skin was still damp. It allowed her skin barrier to repair itself. It did take a little time but it stopped her itching and she soon stopped having flare ups as well.
