Am I the only one who doesn’t much care for Sarah J Maas’s writing style?

Don’t get me wrong, the world building and character development is amazing, yet the writing itself seems subpar. Too simple almost. I had originally assumed her audience was geared toward school-age, until the smut scenes took over. Whoof, no young teen should be reading such content. I did grow up with classics like Jack London and Richard Adams, so maybe I’m biased, but it seems the current writing styles have become more simplistic for adult novels. I could handle ACOTAR, but couldn’t get past the first few pages of TOG. It’s just not my vibe. (I get it, to each their own, maybe I’m the only one not riding the Maas train. 🚂🙃)

I’m curious, what do you think about other popular author’s writing styles? I feel this way about Rebecca Yarros and Freida McFadden

Im not riding that train either but mostly because I dont care for Romantasy/Fantasy. I know everyone is obsessed but I prefer mafia romances myself 😅🤷🏻‍♀️

I think she just writes beginner friendly romantasy. Nothing too complex to get people back into reading.
Her writing is probably subpar at least with TOG because she was 16 when she originally wrote it.
But I cant say too much on her writing style because I listened to ACOTAR as a graphic audiobook so it just felt like I was listening to a show since it doesnt follow the book word for word and its more like a script.

She wrote the first TOG book when she was 16. 🤷🏻‍♀️ I personally enjoyed watching her writing style change over the course of all 8 books.

The market is less about art and more about entertainment. they make it easily digestible bc more people now read for an escape from a stressful world. mainstream books now make things simple bc that’s what publishers are saying people want. no multi million dollar business owner wants an informed, creative public.

I read the first two ACOTAR books and stopped half way through the third. They aren’t bad but I expected better from all the hype. I also don’t find them that smutty.

I LOVE TOG but did not like the 2 books I read of ACOTAR and never started Crescent City

I struggled with the first few books of TOG, too. As a few others have said, she wrote the first one when she was 16, so it very much reads like a YA novel. The series starts to get good at Heir of Fire. There's a lot of character development and emotional depth. Its actually my all time favorite series now. ACOTAR is definitely a more simple read. Its beginner friendly fantasy. I just finished the CC books yesterday, and have mixed feelings about it.

hmm I actually haven’t tried any of their books. Maybe that’s why lol, but I’ve never cared much for romantasy. I tried ACOTAR because of all the hype. I’ve heard of The Housemaid and haven’t tried it yet.

that’s crazy!! Imaginative creativity and the ability to string words together is what makes an author an author. To use Chat GPT is a disgrace to the entire literary community. Smh.

oh, no wonder. 🤭
