Hi everyone, my little girl will be 5 weeks old tomorrow. I’m a first time mum and my girls really struggling with what we think is colic. When she was 2 weeks old she was sick while we was out and it was bright yellow and she screamed and was in so much pain so I took her to A&E and they said it was gastro colic. She went weeks without any symptoms but this last week she has been in constant pain and discomfort. She’s drinking around 5oz of cow&gate every 3-4 hours but is in pain while drinking and pain hours after the bottle. Night time she seems to be settled especially after a bath but in the day she won’t be put down. We have plenty of wet of dirty nappies and thankfully she hasn’t lost any weight. We currently use the mam anti colic bottles but have purchased the tommee tippee advanced anti colic to try and are wondering if to try her on some new milk like the Kendamil comfort? We’ve raised this issue with the health visitor but unfortunately got the “I told you breast is best” comment and got next to no advice, when we’ve spoke to the GP their response is to contact health visitor so at this point we are just going round in circles. She’s a very sicky baby and will projectile vomit all her bottle up at least once a day so feeds are very strict in the sense of keeping her upright while drinking & for at least 30 minutes after a bottle and paced feeding/ burping after so many OZs.
Any advice would be massively appreciated.

I had a colic baby 10 years ago and I still remember how bad it was.. I changed his bottles to dr browns bottles as I was told they are the best as they filter the bubbles out that cause the gas/ colic but the most affective and this worked but also was told to buy the colief drops in boots and I did that too and a huge difference so I stuck with that. I have a 6 week old now with same issues so I just swapped to dr browns bottles again from mam and it calmed down alot but this time I bought the infacol and kendamil comfort drops and that was mostly because they didnt have the other ones the day I went for them and again this helped instantly with both. She is also on kendamil milk after cow and gate and aptamil was recalled so another reason why with the drops too. Amazon have offers on the bottles at the moment. I got both on there.

If she’s projectile vomiting her bottles I’d be ringing 111 for advice. It could be reflux if she’s in pain drinking her bottles and after finishing a feed. I wouldn’t go with Kendamil as that formula is very rich and can be heavy on babies tummies. Have you tried anti reflux formula to see if that helps with the sickness?x

My little girl was exactly the same. We tried EVERYTHING. she still has ma’am anti colic bottles; we went to pedestrians, A&E, and Drs about the projectile vomiting no one really gave us too much of an answer; they tried medicated milk for lactose allergies etc; We eventually put her on cow and gate anti reflux milk which she was a lot better on it settled alot better with minimal sickness; however she’s now on HIPP anti reflux from morrisons and she has no sickness at all. Definetly recommend atleast giving it ago

It’s because the ‘professionals’ don’t actually know what causes colic. Colic isn’t a diagnosis’ as such, it’s a term used because there’s something not quite right whether that be bottles, formula etc. my 1st (now 2) had colic horrendously, we switched from kendamil to prescribed milk (SMA lactose free) but she had no milk allergy, and changed her bottles from MAM to Dr brown and it worked wonders, after trying all the drops etc, which in my experience don’t work at all. My second was a sicky baby, changed from Dr brown bottles to Philips avent, and then changed her milk to amino acid type from the GP and it worked (we did try about 5 different milks before getting to this one) again she has no milk allergy… it’s trial and error. You’ll know if the milk is right within 48 hours, you don’t need to wait 2 weeks like some say, paediatricians and drs told me this. Again this is only from my experience not saying it would fix your issues. But I’d start with changing her milk for sure

My boy was like that everyone kept saying it was colic and reflux but it wasn’t he has cmpa (cow milk protein allergy) but it took me 4 weeks for doctors to listen to me

Could be worth trying a different milk as others have already mentioned, its all trial and error at this age. We used kendamil comfort my LO at that age but it didn't really improve his colicky or refluxy symptoms. Babies guts are still maturing at 5 weeks and colic and reflux start peaking around this age althought the timeline can vary from baby to baby.
Have you tried offering smaller feeds more frequently??
