Issue w/ Early Headstart and Allergies

For those who don’t know early Headstart is a federal program for kids 0-3, they come to the house on a weekly basis to provide developmental activities and educational services. They also do monthly playgroups to provide more educational activities and chance to socialize and get ready for pre-k/ school.

My child has been in the program for about half a year now. They host playgroup twice a month and we have tried going to playgroup however we have had to leave early every single time we’ve gone. My child has severe anaphylactic allergies, her worse being dairy, which I notified them of upon intake and have talked to them about every single time I’ve gone to playgroup and I’ve spoken to them various times outside of playgroup. We end up having to leave playgroup early every time because they serve pizza, every single time, which my daughter is deathly allergic to. Even if I were to pack her own lunch, which I have no issue doing, the other kids having pizza poses a huge risk to her safety. Even coming in contact with something that has touched the pizza, so any of the kids hands or anything they touch, can cause her to have a reaction. I can’t just trust that kids eating pizza won’t touch anything until they wash their hands and I can’t just trust they will wash their hands well enough to prevent a reaction. I mean these kids are all under 3.

Every single time before I leave I talk to them about this issue and they tell me the same thing, that they will talk to the nutritionalist and find out what she can do. This has been going on for months though and nothing has been done. I’m to the point I don’t even want to take her.

I have been apart of early head start for about 3 years now and I’m heavily involved in most of their programs. Idk what county you are in or what CAC you are going through but it has nothing to do with a nutritionist. They are lazy. They aren’t ordering appropriate food because they forget about your child’s allergies. I’d file a formal complaint. They are govt funded and complaints aren’t taken lightly when you go to their highest rank.
