Induction due to larger baby

My baby was 10lb 4oz according to my 37+5 growth scan.

My first baby was 9lb 11oz.

The worst thing you can do for a big baby is induce them, you’d be far better opting for a c section. Worth noting that scans have a large margin for error so there’s a good chance your baby isn’t actually as big as they say especially this late on.

Induction/ sweeps etc force baby before they’re ready. If a big baby is going to come vaginally they need to be allowed to find the correct position in their own time otherwise malposition causes a domino of issues as I discovered in my first pregnancy.

Growth scans aren't accurate and can be off by 10-15%. People I know who was told their baby was "big" or "small" turned out perfectly normal size upon delivery.

Everyone I've spoken to (me included) have been recommended an induction at 39 weeks - sounds like it's nhs standard these days and they just want you on a schedule. I of course, can't say for sure that your baby isn't "big" if the scan is showing that. The percentile also goes off your BMI so your baby could look the exact same as someone else but if your BMI is different then the baby will be different on this percentile chart they use.

It is however your decision - research shows inductions lead to more medical interventions, longer and more painful labour and it usually ends in an emergency c section as you are speeding up labour when baby isn't ready. I'd recommend looking at what an induction could mean for you before agreeing.

Mine is a c section

I have had 8.4lb,10.8lbs, 10.3.5lbs then was measuring big for latest baby so they said I should be induced even though I had both the 10lbs naturally with gas and air and no tears or complications. It resulted in my first emergency C section and was a horrible ordeal. Took me ages to recover aswell. Now I’m expecting baby no 5 and the consultant has assured me I won’t need to be induced solely due to big measurements (I mean the scans are known for being wrong a lot too!)

My first pregnancy I was induced at 39 weeks and 3 days (which seemed utterly pointless anyway) as my whole pregnancy they'd told me my son was measuring huge and at the last scan they told me he was between 10 and 11lb and wanted to induce me before my due date. My son was born 39 weeks and 4 days at 7lb 1oz. He ended up in nicu as the induction stressed him out so much. Now this pregnancy every measurement is being taken with a pinch of salt. I genuinely think id choose a c section over induction if needed this time. I didn't get to see my son until he was 3 hours old. And didn't get to hold him until he was 3 days old. I know a lot of people who have positive induction experiences. But for me personally if it comes to it I will choose c section over induction this time

I’m in the same boat and now considering if elective C-section may be better if it may end up resulting in an emergency one in the end anyway x

I was induced on my 3rd as he was measuring ahead throughout the whole pregnancy really, 4wks ahead! - I ended up being induced a few days earlier than the booked date due to reduced movements. On the scan that day they estimated he would weigh 4.12kg..... hours later he arrived at 4.8kg! So scans can be wrong but they can be wrong either way not just baby ends up being smaller
I was 37+6 - for the induction they just broke my waters. To be honest I'm not sure if the birth seemed so hard because of the fact that he was induced, the size of him or because I was so tired (12hrs waiting to start due to lack of space in labour ward after an already terrible night sleep) - I ended up getting an epidural and needed suction cup, I had no pain relief on the previous two (3.78kg and 4.22kg)
I had been against an induction because of hearing all about the complications especially the risk of ending up in a C-section, but obviously agreed as soon as it was reduced movements and they were worried about him.

I was told by my growth scan that my baby would be 9 pounds if I went full term 40 weeks, that he was measuring almost 7 pounds by 35 weeks and I gave birth at 38 weeks to a 7lb 4oz baby.. growth scans can be so off

Hey, I gave birth 11 months ago and was induced at 39wks. They wanted to induce because I had polyhydramnios. At first they were pressuring me to consider a C-section because she was transverse throughout my entire pregnancy, but thankfully went head down at 36-37wks. Then they were pressuring me to induce because they believed she was going to be a bigger baby and they were concerned about her kidneys due to the polyhydramnios. I went in on a Thursday night. They tried the Cervidil, an then eventually Cytotec. But nothing was triggering me to go into labor. They induce me with Pitocin at 5pm on Friday and contractions started to pickup within the hour. I declined the epidural and any other pain meds. (The Pitocin was UNBEARABLE) They wanted to break my water by 9:40pm, I refused. My water broke 10 minutes later. Fetal Rejection Reflex kicked in, crowning within 5 minutes, baby came at 10:16 and she weighed exactly 8lbs.
