Can anybody’s 3 year old read?

I wouldn't say my daughter can read but she can recognise some words like her name etc, but not actually be able to phonetically read it as such. Which is fine as educationally its starts in reception. Of course at home helps too ❤️

I use to do reading with reception children and they're all at different levels and that's fine 😌

Mine can’t read, he appears to read when he has his favourite book because he has memorised the whole thing 😅 if I write anything down he automatically thinks I’ve written his name, so he’s not even close to reading yet x

My 3yo has absolutely no interest in reading. My eldest at this age, couldn’t read, but she did know all her single phonic sounds. But she was just more interested.
It’s not something to worry about at all.

By the time they start school next year, I think the minimum requirement in terms of reading would be to recognise their own name. But independence is more what teachers will want to see (toilet trained, shoes on themselves etc).

Learning to read is a layered skill, learning the sounds, blending, learning digraphs etc, so it’s really not something to worry about right now. I would carry on reading but wouldn’t push anything unless they show interest.
