Do you think grandparents should be a thing or should be abolished?

I’m from the UK so it’s not a thing here, but if it was I’d take issue with it.

Oops, I meant to write “grandparents rights” not just grandparents 🤦‍♀️

No they shouldn’t be a thing in my opinion. Unless the child is unsafe with parents then that’s a different situation but if parents have made the decision to limit or abolish contact between their children and grandparents that’s their right as a parent

I didnt kno grandparents had rights. If theyre toxic which ive noticed alot are then no it should be abolished but some parents arent capable of caring for thier own children so grandparents are the next safest option

I'm so glad grandparents rights aren't a thing here. My husband cut off contact with his toxic and abusive mum 9 years ago, she's occasionally attempted contact since. I couldn't imagine her having any rights to our boys

Nobody has rights to children except the mother and father. Definitely always set boundaries and if anybody disrespects it, deny access to your children. They should always be the number one priority before anybody’s feelings

I'm just curious where in America is grandparents rights a thing?

Grandparents don't actually have rights to children in the US unless they are legal guardians for some reason, so there is nothing to abolish. I assume you mean here because its the only place I've ever heard of anyone using the phrase, except people from anywhere else making fun of Americans and their "grandparents rights". This is just a talking point of shitty parents who are now wanting access to their grandkids and their kids (the new parents) say no because they were such shitty parents to them.

In order to actually obtain "grandparents rights" they would have to prove the parents or current legal guardian is unfit to care for the child. People in the US just love to throw around the phrase "I have rights"
