Flying with a 20 month old

My husband and I are taking a 2.5 hour flight with our 20 month old while I will be 5 months pregnant. We are bringing her car seat for the trip, but would you put it under the plane/gate check and have her lap sit for free, or pay for a seat and bring her car seat on the plane?
