How do you keep bugs out of a sand pit?

Just got a sand pit for our toddlers and it comes with a cover but wondering if anyone has more advice on how to keep it critter free.

I think adding cinnamon is supposed to help? But that can also cause skin irritation. I haven't tried anything because all the options were kind of risky in other ways. Our sand box had a cover too, but it's wooden and there is plenty of space between the slats for spiders, so it's really more for keeping any outdoor cats out if there are any near you
