This is my first time owning a dishwasher, but google says to not pre-rinse but sometimes my plates will still be dirty if I don’t pre-rinse

I wash them then put it in the dishwasher for the shine

You don’t need to pre rinse if there’s no food stuck on them, but yeah always try to rinse and scrape off any excess food stuck to the plate.

Depends on the dishwasher and how often you use it. Ours runs every couple of days, so usually plates aren't in there long enough for it to matter. If it were running once a week you'd probably want to rinse them.
And certain foods tend to stick more. Egg yolk is a bad one, it's like glue. I use cascade dishwashing detergent, and don't neglect the rinse aid - there should be a place in the dishwasher for it and it helps the dishes come out cleaner and shinier.
Certain dishes, like wine glasses, you may want to still wash and dry by hand, as they can become cloudy with repeated washings.

I don't wash them, I get food off and I know if something won't come clean. You'll learn how good your dishwasher is and how much you have to do before putting them in.

I rinse/scrape excess sauce, food, or grease. I don't hand wash them then put them in the dishwasher though
