Breastfeeding and Alcohol

How strict is everyone with the time gap between drinking alcohol and then breastfeeding?
I’ve got a 3 month old and haven’t gone back to drinking yet, but thinking about it. It’s not like I miss it that much, but I guess it’s nice to have some when socialising or going out.
Some of the mums I know aren’t very strict with it, so just wanted to know how everyone else is with it.

I didn't drink when I was pregnant or breast feeding. I didn't want to chance it...they have strips to where you can test your milk but I still just didn't drink. It wasn't worth the hassle for me. Before finding out I was pregnant, last time I drank was new years. And they think conception was around late March or early April. So I didn't drink at all until I stopped breast feeding.

I just watched what I had, had lighter ABV drinks. Also had plenty of water on the go.

If you can hold your baby, you can feed your baby.

I've also been curious about this myself, my bf bought me wine coolers like... 2-3 months ago and I still haven't drank any because I've been unsure. So, love to see different opinions on the matter. Commenting mainly to stay in the loop

I never gave up coffee when pregnant and breastfeeding. I did stop drinking alcohol when pregnant, but the first thing I did when I got home after giving birth was crack open a beer 🤣 only one though. I do drink. But only when I go out/after playgroup etc. So once or twice a week. Maybe more if it's a special occasion

My doula/ professional lactation consultant informed me that there is no issue drinking while breastfeeding at all and the amount of alcohol that would actually transfer to the milk would be the same alcohol content as if drinking apple juice. Obviously once you’re not downing entire bottles of vodka. “If you can hold your baby, you can feed your baby” was her professional advice.

I drank alcohol for the first time a few days ago (I’m EBF and my LG is almost 6 months) I pumped milk prior to going out for my birthday and had two large glasses of red wine, came home about 2 hours later, my girl hadnt had any of the pumped milk as she was fussy with the bottle so ended up giving her the breast directly as she needed milk! She was absolutely fine and I was also worried and apprehensive about it- I think the amount of alcohol that transfers into breast milk is really low- I think as long as you’re not binge drinking and just having 1 or 2 glasses (and safe to hold baby) then it’s fine- I’m still limiting to just the odd day here and there when I fancy one! 😊

i read that alcohol is in your breastmilk for as long as it is in your blood. so if you have one drink, you should ideally wait 2-3 hours before feeding again

I comb-fed both of mine and enjoyed a glass or 2 of wine every now and then. If you can wake up and hold your baby, you’re capable of feeding baby. The amount of alcohol that would be transferred to baby is absolutely minimal. “A drop in the ocean” as someone once told me.

I'm feeding q almost 3 year old and 8 momth old and will have a cocktail or cider with a meal on weekends, had 2 cocktails in 1 night on holiday and still fed them both, milk is made form your bood not your stomach so it's such a small amount that would transfer into you milk, especially if it's just 1 drink
