Legal aid or pay for lawyer

Hi, has anyone won a case with their lawyer on legal aid. I've got a domestic abuse case against my ex husband for my son . I am worried that I might not win due to low paying if that makes sense. Things might take a while and my ex hasn't been arrested yet but things are happening and I am worried he will get contact. I have some evidence but worried my words aren't enough to save my son from his abusive dad.
