Sterilising and overthinking

I remember feeling this with my first and now I'm right back there with my second...

Sterilising. It drives me crazy because I sterilise the bottles/pump parts etc, all good, but then the packaging says to rinse afterwards, but then it's no longer sterile?

Even if I don't rinse, I need to dry. But a towel or kitchen paper again isn't sterile.

So I could let them air dry, but then if they're needed before they've completely air dried there's still droplets (especially some of the pump parts).

I lose my mind over it! What do you do?!

I'm EBF so this is for bottles for breastmilk and pump parts, which I know there is also conflicting advice on whether you actually need to sterilise or not 😵‍💫

And when you touch it with your hands, are they sterile after that? 😉 don’t worry about it too much. I never rinsed after sterilising, just wiped it with fresh dry cloth if they were still wet, if they dried in the machine, I would use them as they were and it was always fine x

You are sterilising harmful bacteria away eg from formula, you are not needing the equipment to be sterile like in a hospital if that makes sense! You dont even need to sterilise items which only contact breastmilk if you dont want to- my midwife explained that even the milk bank which accepts donor breastmilk for the tiniest sickest babies does not asked for things to be sterilised. I wash my hand pump in hot soapy water once a day only and sterilise it maybe once a week. I do sterilise by bottles because I am doing formula/breastmilk mixed bottles once or twice a day. But having them drying on a clean towel is totally fine

How are you sterilising? If you're using cold water and Milton tablets I know it says on the packet to rinse the solution out before use, which can be done with cooled boiled water since that's sterile. I would normally then just shake out the excess water and if there's a few drops left then it's not going to cause any harm because that water is sterile anyway. We use cold water sterilising in the NICU and that's the process we follow. The same would apply to steam sterilising though which is what I do at home, once it's finished the water droplets left over are still sterile so shaking out the excess and using without drying is fine ☺️

Ms.rachel

Do you and when did you start turning on ms.rachel for your little ones? My baby is 10 months and I don't turn on any screens for her but I have heard that people start early to help with speech development. Obviously in moderation. Any thoughts

Very unsettled baby girl tonight 😢

My 4 week old seems to just not want to settle/sleep unless she is on me or my husband or being nursed by me. Every time I try to transfer tonight she just starts crying and getting inconsolable. Have made sure she’s fed, burped, helped with gas, changed etc but nothing seems to be working tonight when usually she is ok. I am absolutely exhausted and my husband is working tomorrow so having to manage solo is pretty tough. Anyone else or any suggestions?

I need your help/advice

My 6 day old hasn’t done a poo for almost 72 hours now. He’s been passing wind and peeing normally. The last time I spoke to the midwife, it had been 48 hours since his last poo, and she said she wasn’t too worried and advised me to continue feeding him.

I’m calling again tomorrow, but I wanted to see if anyone has experienced something similar. We switched from formula to 100% breastfeeding about 3 days ago, and I have no idea whether he’s getting enough milk. I can see and hear him swallowing, but it’s still so confusing trying to know how much he’s actually getting.

Any thoughts or similar experiences?

2nd baby

hey! I am currently 18 weeks pregnant with my second, my first is 27 months old and will be 32 months when my second is born.

I do a lot of walking at the moment and plan to do it with my second, but I just wanted advice about whether people with similar age gaps have gone for double pushchairs or buggy boards!

I am worried about spending loads of money on a double pushchair that my son won’t really use for long and I’m worried about converting our Icandy peach 7 back into a carrycot if he is going to want to use it!
