A question for anyone that knows a lot about home births; on average how much does the whole process cost? Midwife, doula, pregnancy tub?? In comparison to a hospital visit? I’m pregnant with my first beb & really starting to consider a home birth. I originally just assumed I would go with a hospital because it’s the more “normal” route. However I’m starting to think why not do a home birth, especially in times like these and I’m low risk! If I could save some money also, that’d be extra awesome. Would love some input/advice. 🥰

5k-8k (8k is pretty unusual it’s typically around 4,500-6,500) with all your prenatal, post natal and birth included. Doulas are typically another expense (anything from $300-$1000) If you have insurance typically birthing centers and midwives make you pay out of pocket by 36/38 weeks and then you’ll be reimbursed by your insurance for the amount. But if you don’t have the 5-6K to pull out it can be a hassle unfortunately :/ , this is my first bebe, I’m a young mom as well that’s why I decided to go with who my insurance would completely pay for and then work my birthing plan into it as best as I could. And I’d say after what seemed to be countless interviews I’ve found what works best for me in my space of life and for my peace of mind. I’m going with a Midwife Clinic/“Hospital” and as a Low risk birthing person I’m able to do a program through them called “simply baby” which is low intervention care (delayed cord clamping, laboring in a Tub WITH my spouse, immediate skin to skin)

As well as delaying vaccines, And then the out of pocket expense for a doula is worth it for me (Postpartum in specific, due to this being my first birthing experience) ! Hope this helps!

My homebirth midwife charges $3500 covers all things prenatal and birth

Depends on the state you live in, in Washington, it is $5000 but my insurance takes care of almost all of it. Then you have to buy your birth kit that is around $50-75. I know in some other stare it can be cheaper.

Im 26 weeks right now and I’ve been struggling with my birth plan due to my insurance. I have Kaiser and I’m in San Diego too. So my insurance doesn’t cover Home births or birth centers which is initially what I wanted. With everything going on financially idk if we’re going to be able to afford the home birth or birth center ): But to give you a little information since you’re from San Diego, there’s two place I looked into and it was birth matters in Oceanside and babies in bloom in vista! I really liked both and interviews a few midwives and love them all honestly! Some were a little cheaper than others but the overall pricing for everything like some other women stated was between 5,500-6,500.
I’m probably gonna end up doing a hospital birth but try and do it unmedicated. I really wanted to labor in the Tub but I’m not quite sure Kaiser has that option even if you get a midwife through them.

My home birth costs $4,800 (includes all prenatal and post birth care and placenta encapsulation), but it doesn’t include the birth kit or water tub. I think it is worth it!! Money is harder to come by with being laid-off due to Covid, but with my insurance in jeopardy due to the lay-off, a home-birth makes a lot of financial sense. In addition, I don’t want to be separated from my baby or given “medicine” I do not need to speed up labor. I also don’t want my baby to have vaccines immediately or the cord cut too soon. If you weigh what’s important to you through a pros and cons list it really helps. Also, talk to woman! Hear their positive home-birth stories. So many people have fear of childbirth. Ina May’s Guide to Childbirth book really helped me overcome a lot of my fears.

It depends on the individual professional you choose and other aspects such as insurance coverage. In my state (WA) most insurances cover home birth and in that case it's much cheaper (around $5k for all prenatal, birth, and postpartum care compared to the hospitals usually $15-30k bill, and insurance usually covers 80-100% of that depending on coverage). The lower cost with the midwife I think frees you up to splurge on the doula of your choice or a birth photographer, etc.
One of the midwives I work with charges $4500 for cash pay, but gives a 50% discount if you pay by 34 weeks I believe. The birth pool rentals range from $100-200 depending. Doulas can run from $500-5000, you can also sometimes find someone getting started or working towards certification that will do it cheaper or free.

I’m in NJ and have found a midwife for 6000 and one for 8200. I got super lucky and the one that is normally $8200 offers a special rate for military spouses of $3000 so that’s what I’m doing. Hoping my insurance will reimburse me later but we’ll see.

I’m in Texas but a home birth midwife here costs $2,000-$8,000.
I’ve never had a doula so I can’t comment on that expense.
Birth tub most midwives will provide, most likely for a small extra fee but you will need to purchase the liner. You’ll also most likely have to purchase the birth kit. You can check In His Hands website for an idea of prices but whichever midwife you go with will give you a detailed list of what she needs you to provide - every midwife is different.
I’ve never had a hospital birth but I will say that before I switched from an ob to a midwife with my second baby - they wanted over $3k for just an ultrasound AND I have insurance. Sooooo 😬

Depends on your insurance and if you have an unassisted homebirth or use a midwife and then it depends on the midwife. My first babe I used a midwife, total bill was $4,200 and I paid $3,500 out of pocket (insurance covered some of the prenatal care & tests). My friend had a hospital birth and after insurance paid almost $5,000 out of pocket.
My third birth I had at home unassisted and I legit spent maybe $10-$15 dollars buying chucks pads and a curtain

I just got a quote today which was $7000-$7500 with 4 after birth visits for a home or birth center birth. (This is 100% out of pocket & no insurance reimbursement)
Birth alone with a hospital was quoted around $6500!

Where I live it would be 4-6k including everything: midwife, doula, birth kit, renting a birth pool. (Some midwives include pool in their fees)

If I could go back in time I'd make sure I was insured for midwifery care or with a health care share program because there are some that cover homebirths but not if you weren't already a member.

I'm in TN. Cost can depend on midwife. My midwife's fee is $3500. That includes all prenatal visits, any testing, the birth, and 6 weeks of post partum care. Using her tub and liners is an additional $150.
Our insurance doesn't cover home births but we can use our HSA to pay for it.
