I’m a FTM wanting to breastfeed my baby but I would also like to pump right along with it. I’m wanting to pump so my husband can help with night feedings and so I don’t have to worry about feeding my baby while out in public. I am wanting to know when a good time to start pumping is. Should I start before he gets here, right after we take him home or should I wait a few weeks??

Well from what I’ve heard, if you have a deep freeze milk is good up to a year. I’d take advantage of it

Start as soon as you get home! I wish I had done that in order to have a better supply. I read a lot about waiting 6 weeks for your milk to regulate. Not sure if that’s true or not. Anyways I started pumping regularly at about 2.5 weeks pp and it has made my supply work alright for my lifestyle. Although if I had started sooner I’m sure I’d have a better supply! Supper happy with mine as is. But definitely starting soon for future kids.

Commenting to hear answers cuz I plan on / want to do same thing

My Midwife told me to start after 6weeks.. it’s long! I am planning to do it earlier

I was told to wait until 6 weeks by a LC. However, my baby’s pediatrician told me at my baby’s one month appointment that if I wanted to pump I could start. She said to do it once in the morning after he eats since that’s when you produce the most.

The recommendation is to wait 6 weeks to avoid an oversupply. I started using a Haakaa the day after I got home. It was a slow start but I get anywhere from 2-4oz per feed. It’s a gentler solution unless pumping is the only option in some cases 🤷🏽♀️

Yes start before he gets here. If your milk has came in

I’m a midwife. Recommendation is to wait until 6 weeks otherwise you will be tampering with your body’s supply. Telling your body it needs to produce more than needed.
I waited until 6 weeks. But before this I would manually express a little (30-40mls) with a haakaa. Before a feed because my let down was v forceful for my baby. I would save this and dad could give this to my baby whilst I napped.
