Advised to stay away from my cat :/

I’m 5+4 and my Doc told me to stay completely away from my cat . Since we’ve been trying my husband has been cleaning the litter. But I’ve been advised to not make any contact with my cat for the duration of my pregnancy and I’m devastated 😔. Has anyone encountered this ? And what ways have you used to cope ? Thank you in advance . Just trying to stay positive . I want my baby and myself happy and healthy . That’s def a priority . But my cat is always under me :/ should I give her to a fam member ?

Is this because of the risk of Toxoplasmosis? The advice here in the UK is to only stay away from cat faeces and anywhere there could be cat faeces or wear gloves and then thoroughly wash hands afterwards. Toxoplasmosis can’t be transmitted through simply touching your cat, it’s only found in their faeces.

Is there a reason your doctor has said this? I have two cats, and i live alone and im now 37 weeks. I just put gloves on when cleaning the litter tray, Ive been completely fine 🙂

I've only ever been told to stay away from the litter box and the feces. I was still allowed to interact with my cats. I had one who spent a lot of time on my baby bump during my pregnancy.

I snuggled all five of my cats during pregnancy. The feces is how toxoplasmosis is transfered. This sounds like an overly paranoid/ignorant doctor. Has your cat ever been diagnosed with toxoplasmosis?

I’m 20 weeks. My husband does the litter tray but I have regular cuddles with my fur baby. I couldn’t stay away even if I tried! She’s been sooo cuddly since I’ve been pregnant x

I have two cats and changed the litter the entire pregnancy. I just use gloves and washed my hands thoroughly. I did a lot of reading about Toxoplasmosis and cats can only contract it if they are allowed outdoors and eat small animals and/or raw meat. My cats were strictly indoors so there was no way for them to get the parasite which is what is dangerous for the fetus. I’ve never heard of getting the parasite from just touching your cat but if you’re worried you can just wash your hands after snuggle time.

I know that their faeces can be dangerous for pregnant women, but my partner’s just been cleaning our cat’s litter tray since I found out I was pregnant. I’m 38 weeks now and never had any issues or been told by any medical professional not to touch my cat at all...

I've never heard this and I have 7 cats, I was told by my hv that when you bring the child up with animals they are less likely to develop allergies

I forgot to note... your kitty is amazingly cute 😍

My sister-in-law is 35 weeks right now and she’s been cuddling both of her cats this whole time! She’s also very careful about following all the “rules” laid out to her by her doctor. If it was me, I would just cuddle my cats anyways. I don’t feel like it’s worth it to be scared of every tiny little risk out there when you’re pregnant. If we followed the logic this doctor has regarding the likelihood you could get this disease from petting your cat, then we’d all be banned from riding in cars because getting in an accident is way more likely to happen.

I have no references to back that statistic up, I’m just assuming.

I heard there’s some parasite in cat litter. Also, the cats smell really puts me off.

Ive never been told this and I have two cats! Just like everyone else has been saying, I was told to stay away from the litter box! I think you've been given wrong information which unfortunately happens from time to time :/

Its safe to interact with your cat 😊 if youre concerned speak to your midwife or a different doctor 👀 X

My partner does the litter tray and I have regular cuddles with my cat. Your doctor sounds really paranoid! X

Yeah I have two cats that sleep with me. I've never heard avoid the cat, just the box.

UPDATE** : Thank you all so so much ! I felt that same way about my doc being dramatic . Lol but I didn’t want something to happen just in case . It helps to hear other stories and experiences . My cat snuggles w me all the time and I’m already a huge germophobe so there isn’t any face contact and I wash my hands more than I should lol (so dry now) . But I even looked at my doc crazy . Lol that’s the military for ya. Lol I’m happy to know I don’t have to say bye to my baby . My cat doesn’t go outside or eat anything raw . At the end of the month , I have a vet visit to test for toxoplasmosis for kitty . I think that will also ease my mind . As for now , I will be super careful until I get that confirmation . Thanks again ladies ! ❤️

Never was told to avoid the cat, only the litter box. My boyfriend would change it while he was working in town, but when he was out of town I still changed it & everything is fine!! My cats are only indoor cats though

Your kitty is sooo adorable!
I’ve Never heard of this! I have two cats and my husband just cleans their litter box once a day. They seem to sense somethings different about me since they’re much more cuddly and follow me around like shadows way more than they used to. One of them is very careful to avoid stepping on my bump when she wants to snuggle and the other literally loves to lay on top of the bump purring 🥰
I just wash my hands after petting them before eating. I couldn’t turn down my fur baby’s snuggles for 9 months but I did raise them from teeny kittens so couldn’t imagine giving them to someone else just cuz a dr made a suggestion like that

Your kitty looks so cute and I wouldn't worry really as long as you aren't doing anything with the cat litter or the box for it then you should be fine to cuddle you fur baby as much as you want.
I have 3 fur babys and I'm slightly allergic to them but I have not stopped being around them or cuddling with them they are just as much family as there baby brother is 💕

Check the CDC webpage, very clear on safety issues in pregnancy around cats - it is definitely safe to cuddle your cat

I have two cats that snuggle on top of me and I’m 23 weeks pregnant. I don’t touch the litter box, that’s it.
