Walking to induce labor

I’m currently 35+3 weeks pregnant. I’m a waitress, still working part-time. I’ve heard that walking can induce labor. I’m constantly on my feet. I worked six hours today with a break, but still walked 6,000+ steps. When will walking help induce labor? How much walking do I actually need to do? Today was a super slow day so I’m usually moving a whole lot more.

I had to be induced with my first at 39+5. I walked 20k+ steps a day and roughly 6 miles and none of it helped.

Sex. Only thing that's worked for me!

I worked until 37w doing around 14000 steps a shift (restaurant supervisor) 5 days a week & it never helped speed up mine

I did go for a 5mile countryside hill walk day 2 days after my due date though & day after went into labour. Day before that we had sex so either or neither could have helped

I don't think it induces labour so much as speeds things up once they have started. I walked a lot in early labour and things got moving pretty quickly after that!

Walking or no walking, that baby is coming when it’s good and ready! Some women can’t do anything to get that labor started and some women do everything they possibly can to prevent it from starting too early, and it happens anyway!

I noticed about 2 days before my water broke that I was WIDE AWAKE and just go, go, go when I had been completely exhausted for two weeks prior. I guess the energy and insomnia happens from a spike up in oxytocin right before labor onsets. So it’s something you might look for, but it sounds like you could easily have another month (or more!) worth of waiting to do, especially since you are a first time mommy!

I know that the third trimester isn’t much fun, but enjoy it. Those first few months with baby out are a lot more difficult than the last few months of baby in. 😂

One of my cousins told me to try "10 minute labor inducing workout!" By bodyfit by Amy on YouTube... but only when you're past 37 weeks. I'm 33 right now so I haven't tried it yet but she went into labor the same day she did the workout.

If it’s something you already did before baby and during pregnancy it’s less likely to induce labour, i worked 8+ hours on my feet my whole pregnancy (till the day before my due date) and had to be induced after trying to walk to get labour going didn’t work

Hospitality worker too! I wouldn’t worry too much as your body is used to that amount of walking x

There is an old saying the way you started is the way you finish..... Hint hint hint

Honestly the best thing that got things rolling for me was bouncing on an exercise ball and rubbing my nipples. The nipple rubbing will give you contractions because it will trick your body into thinking you’re breast feeding and that will help dilate you pushing you to go into labor. Wish you a quick and easy delivery

Nothing works .. I was 42 weeks when baby boo decided to come and I started at 0 cm despite my efforts. Every tip to induce labor is garbage

Hi! I drank a 64oz carton of pineapple juice (sugar free kind you can get with WIC) and had my son that same day. There is an enzyme in pineapple juice that softens the cervix.

I worked up to two days before I gave birth at 40 weeks as a server working 5 to 6 days a week 8-10 hours with no break. I definitely didn't have a problem with it but of course everone is different!! If I ever felt like I needed anything, water, food, a breath of fresh air, I made sure to take it though. The two of y'all come first!

Avatar

You really can’t go off of that your body will know when it’s ready to start the process trust me 🤗

Avatar

Are you trying to induce labor at 35 weeks? Because your baby should to stay in for at least another 3 weeks. Baby will come when they’re ready. Walking won’t help this early on.

Avatar

Definitely don’t try to induce labor early.....

Avatar

I walked about the same amount of steps everyday, I'm 38 weeks and still walk tonnes, I think if it is someone you do all the time your body is just used to it and it won't affect you, my midwife always told me there is never any harm in walking xx

Avatar

Lots of sex and running/walking around did it for me!

Avatar

Use a breast pump it can help

Everyone has their thing, I had Taco Bell ( I knew a few people who did that and boom- labor the next day) and I also continued to do Pilates class and walked daily a few miles and he decided he was just too comfy inside. To me it’s all wives tales but good luck!!!!

Walking will definitely help induce labor... when the time is right. It wont bring on early labor. Walking will help baby drop, relax pelvic muscles, loosen hips for labor. When contractions begin, walking will either speed up labor or cause false labor pains to ease down. You can't do any harm in walking unless your dr told you to avoid it, and you definitely wont make baby come any sooner than they already had planned. You're so close, good luck mama 😘

Raspberry leaf tea, and walking for me did it

Avatar

I hiked for 10 hours the day before I was due and didn’t give birth for another week 😭

Avatar

Towards the end of my pregnancy I was drinking heavily steeped raspberry leaf tea, walking 6 miles every day and doing 80 squats every other day. In the end I ended up having to be induced at 41 weeks. 😒

Getting up off the couch and playing in the street with the family kick stated it for me.

I was on car duty so not too much exercise but because I had mainly been sitting or relaxing the few days before so it was a different activity.

Avatar

I drank castor oil and it worked within 24 hours

Avatar

I walked 6 miles the day I had my sweep. I was dilated 3cm. Two days later I went into labor and was a 5.

Avatar

If it’s your first then walking will actually help more in the last week. My doctor told me that since I’m in my 40th week now walking mroe will help to bring on labour.

Avatar

The only thing that worked for me was fennel tea, the walking thing just put me in agony with bad pelvic pain

You do not want to induce labor yet

Avatar

Every baby is different; plus your 35 weeks. Wouldn’t recommend until your 38/39 weeks. Just rest, and relax, you need the strength for labour and after for the lack of sleep.

You start walking when your in active labor and your diluating. That’s when you want help bring on contractions. Gravity!! Try to avoid them having you lay down monitor your contractions. Walk walk and when you feel the contractions hold the rail maintain your breathing relax the body and swing your hips side to side( like knee to knee) to encourage him/her/they down the canal.

You can also ask your OB about sweeping the floor(cervix) which is usually done I think at 38 or 39 weeks.

I was a waitress worked 30-40 hours up to 3 days before birth. I gave birth @ 39 weeks. Being very active on my feet helped me be strong post c section. My son was a nicu baby so I didn’t get to relax I was walking that night in the hospital. But I think walking helps the baby come lower.

Avatar

I use to sit on one of those exercising balls and bounce and rotate on it every day. Helped my labor a lot.

Avatar

Go on a playground swing!! and enjoy the swing ride do it for a good time lol it worked and for me went to labor later that night

Avatar

Not just normal walking but curb walking, your hips need to have a swaying kind of motion so the baby's head will increase pressure and engage. Only do if baby is head down.

Avatar

I walked a lot at the Bronx zoo and I was over due when I got home my waters broke

Avatar

In my first pregnancy I walked a lot. At LEAST 30 mins a day. It didn't induce labor for me. In fact my baby came on time. There are other ways to induce labor: raspberry leaf tea, Pineapple, sex

Avatar

Sex helps induce labour too....

Avatar

Get on a bouncy ball. That worked for me!

Avatar

I walk everyday my partner tells me to rest but I love exercise. 34+3
