How much would you spend on your baby first birthday ?

My sons first birthday cake is costing $240. Is this a fair price for the kind of cake I’m wanting to get done? I don’t care how much it is since it’s his first birthday.

I’m speaking from being a small business owner, they wouldn’t charge it if it wasn’t worth it. It does seem like a lot for a cake butttt That cake is amazing And I’m sure it takes hours! This person is probably charging what they think is fair for their time, expertise, materials, etc. ☺️

If you have the money do it! But shop around if your hesitant

Avatar

So cakes are expensive when at the end of the day it’s just to eat
🙈 but the amount of work and detail that’s done theyre more art these days than just cakes 🙈 I saved a lot on decorations, cup, plates etc by ordering from AliExpress.. they’re perfect and so cute!:)

If money wasn’t an object then yes I’d spend it and crafters like this are usually underpaid.. but personally I definitely wouldn’t spend $240 on a cake for my baby’s first birthday especially if it’s panned to be used for a cake smash! If it’s for photo purposes could you find a photo backdrop on Etsy or something which could then be put in the nursery or something?

Plus cocomelon is extremely popular for a 1st bday theme so I can see where they come from with the price, ofc like the ingredients and if they had to order materials.

Avatar

Honestly for that cake that is pretty cheap. Fondant is not easy to work with lol

Avatar

$240 is fair for that detail and size.

I spent £300 on my sons first birthday. We did a weekend trip to brighton so that covered hotel, sea world, gas, food, ice cream on the beach, presents etc. It was more important for me to invest his birthday money into a nice day out mini staycation than large gifts/a cake.
For this kind of cake, $300 sounds like a fair price, if you can afford it do it, but your 1 year old will likely not care, it’ll be more for you/your family and friends (assuming its for a party) than it will be for him

The cake is cute! Personally I wouldn’t spend that much on a first birthday but if you can afford to do it go ahead! We splurged and did professional cake smash pictures for my little guy and had a super small party, but I’m sure as he gets older we’ll spend more on the parties as he gets friends he wants to invite & is able to do more stuff!

I work in a bakery and that sounds like a normal price for that kind of cake. Cakes with special decorations and characters tend to cost more because it takes someone more time to complete then a regular cake. Plus fondant isn't cheap either

Avatar

It doesnt matter how much ....if you guys are happy and you can afford it ....cake,poney,inflatable playground, giant baby shark whatever it is...go for it🎉🎂🤸🏽‍♀️

Omg can I just say how much I love this! My son is obsessed with cocomelon and we are planning to do his 1st birthday theme as cocomelon! 😍

Love the cake very beautiful

One my toddler would obsess over this cake !

Avatar

I am a cake decorator and that’s a very fair price for a cake like that! It’s so cute! I’m sure your babies birthday party will be amazing!

Avatar

Charge it up! Lol jk spend whatever you want, you have a vision of what you want for the 1st birthday and you should be able to do so guilt free :)

Avatar

I paid $120 for ~50 cupcakes shaped and a small 4 inch smash cake, shaped to look like a mermaid. For the amount of scultping work going into the cake from the picture: I could easily see the price getting much higher.

Avatar

I got quoted 120-150 CAD for a 🦕 smash cake.

My bestfriend makes cakes so she’s doing it instead.
But I come from a family that goes big so to me I’ll do whatever it takes! One is pretty big to me :)

Avatar

Oh God I spent a lot. I didn’t think I was spending a lot at the time but when it all added up it was eye watering 🥴 Funnily enough, the cake was one of the cheapest things! I rainbow cake from hummingbird bakery and cake decorations from amazon

Avatar

How cute!! I will start by saying I made my kiddos cake for his first birthday and cake smash photos. So that seems like a lot to me (I only mean to spend, not high for the value of the work put in), but if you can afford it and that's what you want to do-go for it! One last question though, are you also going to do professional cake smash photos with this cake (or have a different one for cake smash, but at least get photos of this one?) Such a cute cake though!!!

Avatar

I think $240 is a bit excessive. I think that cake can easily be done in the 100 range of even lower...
But then again that depends where you live...I'd also ask a few other places and shop around

Avatar

I got a beautiful cake for $50 and I thought it was too much lol. My daughter wouldn't even touch it either. 😂 🤦‍♀️

Avatar

I spent €85 euro on his cake, and about €300 in gifts. 1st birthday is so special and only comes once. Of course everyone's circumstances is different and no matter what you spend it is special

Avatar

Wow. My little one is a survivor of twins and had a rough start, she is our universe and I got her a cupcake. 240 quid seems a bit excessive personally for something they won't remember or eat more than a couple of bites of. If you've got the money and that's where you want it to go that's cool but no way would I spend that on one cake.

Avatar

I spent £275/$380 on my daughter’s first birthday cake. May seem excessive to some, but who cares what other people think. As long as you can afford it and are happy with it, go for it!

Avatar

It's a bit expensive for me, but if you can afford it then go for it. I personally would spend less on the cake and more on other food. Especially since I know they won't remember it!

Pregnant with baby 2

Hi everyone! I gave birth via emergency c section 9 months ago as my baby boy was measuring big, he pooped inside so there was risk of him inhaling it and I wasn’t progressing past 3cm to have a natural birth and now I’m currently 20 weeks pregnant with my 2nd baby. I’m having a consultation on Tuesday to talk about birth options and to have any questions answered but I don’t know what to ask. I feel like it would be safer having a c section again but at the same time I don’t want a c section. Does anyone have any question ideas I could ask or any advice/stories of similar situations. Tia

Anyone else felt like this?

Hi, I’m 4 months postpartum, little one sleeps through the night and is formula fed, the last week I’ve felt extremely tired and very hungry! Just wondered if anyone else has felt this way/experienced this?

Hey what are your current symptoms?

I’m 37+5

I’m pretty mobile still but anything over a hour or 2 and I’m in discomfort

Getting up from a sitting position is hard

Some of baby’s movements now are bordering on painful especially around my crotch/pelvis

I’m exhausted very easily and nap every single day

Can basically only breathe out my mouth now and I’m snoring and dribbling 😂

Standing in one leg is very painful 😂

Some waves of pain/ tightening but I regular and mild

Low period type aches

And I feel like a fire breathing dragon with this acid reflux

My nose is growing 😂

My fingers swell slightly and go numbs in my sleep so that and constant toilet breaks keep me up ( checked swelling with MW and consultant and all normal, not a worry)

I also do not want to be social in person like I’d rather everyone just be my penpal atm lol

What are your symptoms?
